Breaking the clutch shaft

The warranty is transferrable; says so right in the warranty book that came with the bike so that's not the issue. I also don't believe Triumph would claim lack of maintenance history. It has less than 4000 miles, right? There's only one scheduled maintenance and that's that 500 mile service.

I smell something fishy here. I'd definitely be calling Peter Carleo (correct spelling).

Thanks for the prompt and detailed responses, Im still in shock. I was planning on asking for a detailed bill, but I will also ask for the old parts, I guess what do I do if they dont have them or they refuse to give them to me?

I want the bike back, Im afraid to pay them but I want to ride and see what this bike can do when its working right.

I do not use credit cards so Im paying cash and cash tends to be hard to replace once its tendered. I am going to the dealer as soon as they open tommorow, which is Saturday, Im wondering if I should wait until I can contact Triumph directly before I pick the bike up.

The dealer has only called me once to tell me the bikes done, I had to call them during the whole process to check on the bikes status. A friend of mine who is a used dealer and knows this dealership called on my behalf w/o my knowledge and he told me I was annoying the service department. I didnt even call everyday I was just calling for status checks every couple of days.

I ve never had an unresolved dispute like this Im not sure what to do next

For how much they are charging they shouldn't complain about being annoyed. If they can't supply the parts, I would question whether or not they really did the work. I would also ask to test ride it before paying or tell them you are contacting Triumph directly and that you will pick up the bike next week.

I would not pay in cash, no matter what. Pay with a Postal Money Order or a Western Union Money Order or go to the bank and get a Cashiers Check but not cash. You need a paper trail. I'd demand to have the parts replaced, given to you.... you have that right under the act. It's plainly spelled out and just because Obama is from the Land of Lincoln don't make Illinois any different than any other state.

When Baxters did my R3, I never called. They called me once to tell me it was done but then I had complete faith in Baxters and I wasn't in a hurry anyway. It got done and sat a few weeks before I went to collect it.

You don't have an unresolved dispute yet...you haven't paid the bill yet so it's all conjecture at this point.

It's time for a face-to-face with the dealer/repair shop. At that point you'll know what avenue to pursue. Until your face-to-face, you have no idea, only suggestions.

That sounds simple enough Il stop at my bank and get a certified check. Il call them tommorow and request the old parts and a detailed repair bill. The dealer is over 40 miles away so if they dont agree over the phone I wont waste the gas and Il wait until after the holiday w/e and try n call Triumph

Anyone know what a complete clutch replacement should cost?

I was told the parts were $360 which leaves well over $500 in labor costs, that seems real high to me

I also find it interesting that the dealer was really focusing on the new tires that were replaced under the recall. He also said the gear position sensor was replaced under recall, Im real suspicious after reading all of your responses

Thanks again for all of the suggestions, if your interested Il keep you all updated

Can't tell you on the parts cost. I'd say 350 is ball park. The labor is a crapshoot too. Different shops charge different rates. Lets say their rate is 85 per. That's about 6 hours and that's not unreasonable either. I'm n ot sure if Triumph has a posted flat rate for clutch replacement. Look at it this way. One, our currency ain't worth ****te so shops have to charge an exhorbinant rate to break even and rwo, an average run of the mill attorney charges 180 per hour and don't even get dirty.

I take it that this is an authorized dealer? If it is, I'd not allude to them that you have plans of contacting Triumph or BBB or anyone until after you have paid the bill and taken possession of the bike and remember, once you get down and dirty with them, I'd not be taking the bike back there. No one likes grief, especially independent motor vehicle dealers.

I believe Triumph allows for 4 hours I just did mine and put New test fibers from MTC 3 hours screwing off and back on the road.

I picked up the bike this morning, the dealer charged me 3 hrs labor, but said it really took 7 hrs. I paid and didn't say too much neither did he. I got a detailed invoice and all of the old parts. My wife told me that it was obvious I was a very pissed off hombre, I was concentrating on staying calm so I didnt notice.

The silver lining if there is one is that Triumph was there for a demo ride day, so a whole bunch of people from Triumph NA were up from Georgia. The semi tractor was there and a rather large crowd was there going on test rides. I went up to a couple R3 captains and asked the guy w/ the R3T how his clutch was holding up. One of the Triumph corporate people overheard me (ok, I might have waited to ask so he would hear me) and he came up and asked me what the problem was. I laid it out to him and he very quickly gave me a contact in Georgia to call 1st thing after the holiday. I was assured that something could probably be done, I can only hope.

As far as the dealer goes, they are a Triumph franchisee and have been for quite some time. I kept it as business-like as I could, but I wasnt in any mood for false pleasantries, I think it was obvious. I wrote em a check (to keep a paper trail) got my bike and left.

The bike ran great, amazing what a properly working transmission will do for ride quality. Im now in a better state of mind and am not considering selling it outright, unless of course Triumph gives me a reason to.

I met three R3 captains who were very nice and helpful, I did not get your names, but I want to extend my thanks to you all, you appeared to be looking out for me. I apologize if I was rude, I had a lot on my mind and wasnt very social.

FYI this whole affair was at MCC in Villa Park, IL. I really cant form an opinion of the dealer just yet, I realize they can only ask for a warantee to be covered. The parts totaled $560, not $360 the rest was labor, and taxes.

I guess Il see what happens next week, right now I have the bike back and it appears that its fixed. I hope I can get some of the cash back from Triumph, but for now I think Il try and ride away my frustrations

It's interesting how things come out. Play your ace on Tuesday and call Newman and have a talk with a representative. You can't call Monday, Monday is a holiday.

In the mean time go and ride the bike but be careful. Lots of cagers out this weekend.

Well the bike's been running great. I finally got an email from Peter Carleo, and he basically repeated what the dealer told me, that due to unknown service history the claim is denied.

I asked if this was/is his final position if it is, any suggestions on what to do next?
