Bespoke ITG Air Filter

Does the foam filter have to be oiled after cleaning like a K&N ?

What about something like that but using dry pleated paper so no oily mess ?

An outerwears cover would resolve that. Yes you'd need to oil - but no mess. What's more it'll extend the cleaning/re-oiling interval.

You cant really effectivley clean and reuse paper - and it'd be an expensive "consumable"

I'm in for one of these if they fit as intended.

Been a bit busy the last couple of days - keeping the missus happy (gardening, nothing smutty:p) and taking bike apart to trial fit the filter.

Nice looks like what I did with the Pipercross. Can't wait to see it mounted up. I am curious as to the clearance on the knee. Can you post the overall Dimensions of the filter?
Have PM'd you Scott.

If you're selling them; I'd like one asap. I'll install it on a 2012 R3T modified by Carpenter for 246hp at the rear wheel and run it on the dyno with and without it.
PM me if that's a possibility.
I don't know if it will fit a Touring, the tank and BC are different.

When can we purchase it When???
When everything is checked out, ITG are quite happy to make a few.

Colin, let me know also if you intend to produce these filters and PM me a cost please.

Oh - I don't need the little filter for the crankcase.
Will do when everything is finalised.

Does the foam filter have to be oiled after cleaning like a K&N ?
Yes, with a specific foam filter oil - K&N isn't suitable according to ITG.

I don't think I will be going there, I've had enough grief with this one.

A little more on the filter.

Spent quite a bit of time yesterday and today stripping intake plumbing and trial fitting the ITG. I can now remove the bearclaw and tank blindfold its been off and on so many times.

The prototype fouls the bc in a couple of places which has necessitated a small redesign. When I first looked at it I judged there was enough space under the edge of the BC to clear the filter - not so. Anyway no great shakes, have checked with ITG and they are good to go with the new shape. Filter is still the same length, width and height but has a couple of scallops to clear the bc. Luckily I had two baseplate's lasered and can modify the second one to the new shape. It nicely clears the coolant overflow tank and everything else it needs to. Removing and refitting is an absolute breeze, its off/on in about five minutes with no need to remove the tank.

I have spent a lot of time with ITG on this, great to work with and the guy who makes the bespoke stuff is an artist. All of the technical choices were make with their advise.

Foam is nominal 18mm thick and fire retardant. The prototype had a fire trap gauze as used in F1 filters, this does increase the cost by £48 - my preference is to have it but they will do them without. They've given a rough cost at about £145 including vat but not shipping. (flame trapped £193). Its possible a bulk order would get this down a little.

How its going to go from here is that this week end I am going to make a dummy filter from polystyrene and check the clearances under the bc. If all is ok, ITG will make up the second prototype. Once its back and on the bike I will take some more snaps and post them.

Where is it contacting the bear claw at if you don't mind me asking could you send me some pictures of the locations?

Here is a pic of the first prototype on the bike. For those that like or already have cut bc's this would be a good option imo. ITG already have the templates made up for the manufacture of this version and so its ready to go. Note - some of the cut bc's for triples I've seen would need to be modified for this filter.

The IAT wires need to be lengthened as it is mounted in the baseplate where it should be. It doesn't have to go there, you could leave it where it is like when fitting triple K&N's but this is not really the best solution. The sensor should be in the intake air flow going to the throttle bodies not stuck in still air inside a little filter located over the top of a hot engine.

Also some Solidworks screen-shots of the new type that hopefully will fit under an uncut bc. Still a bit of groundwork to be done on this though.

Thank God I waited to do the tripple K&N's with AIT and crankcase vent filters. What type of oil will this filter use and will it be messy at all? Once you finalize this new version of the prototype when will it go into production? If it's everything it appears to be I have to have one ASAP. I wonder if this setup will throw off any of the tripple K&N tunes that are out there(specifically hanso's)?

Just had a very frustrating couple of days, bits taken off and measured, put back on only to come back off again cos measurements cant be right.

Anyway the long and short of it is there is no way an ITG type foam filter is going to fit using the standard trumpets (inlet runners) AND an uncut bearclaw, you can have one or the other but not both. There is only about 6mm between the major diameter of the trumpet and the inside of the bc, the minimum practical thickness of filter foam is 10mm.

If you look below, the top of the bell-mouth has a cut-out, this is to allow it fit inside the plenum at the rear throttle body position. That cut-out is right up against the inside face of the plenum. The outside of the Plenum is only about 3mm from the inside of the bc.

So back to the drawing board so to speak, bloody annoying really as there is plenty of room for the front and centre trumpets. Bike is back together now, the weather has changed over here and its too good to not be doing any riding. Have to think about making different trumpets.

For those that are ok with cut bc's nothing has changed from before, filter can still be used.
