2016 Roadster engine in an 05 frame

OK... As some of you might remember, I wrecked my 05 over 3 years ago when the trans locked up exactly like Rocket Scientist's bike did. I bought an 09 seven weeks later and started parting out the 05. Back in September, I finally split the cases on the old grey engine to find the gears chewed up due to a circliip that was installed wrong. So after not having any luck selling what was left of the 05, I decided to rebuild her as a Rocket Bobber. I found and bought a complete transmission assembly, ecu, head, etc. One day while refreshing my Rocket ebay search page, I found a 2016 Roadster engine. Holy CRAP! I couldn't pass it up for the price with only 6000 miles on it. So in the last two weeks I was busy mounting the engine and reconnecting the gazillion sensors, etc.
The most major issue so far was the major oil leak under the tank. After removing the throttle bodies and pulling the oil tank I found that the front oil port adaptor on the 16 block was much bigger than the 05. OH SH!T. Sooooooo...I had some options. I removed the adaptor from the 05 engine and from the 16. The 05 adaptor fit right inside the 16. To solve the issue, I cut the flange off of the 05 adaptor and tigged it inside the 16 adaptor. Put it all back together and NO LEAKS.

The other problem was trying to find the connector on the loom to mate up with the gear position sensor on the 16 engine. After a few hopeless hours I had no other choice but to dig into my 09 to see what the hell I was missing. Turns out that the 16 gps has a 4 wire connector and the 05 only uses 2 wires. Great, installed the 2 wire gps from the 05 and was able to jog the starter. The ecu will not allow starter engagement until it sees the proper signals from the gps and the kickstand switch.

This past Saturday I was able to fire her up on ether (starting fluid). I still had some minor dent banging on the tank but was ecstatic to hear her roar to life. Since then I fitted the gas tank and can run her. Still have a lot of nickel and dime stuff to attach yet but I'm confident I have a keeper.

Will post pictures of the project tomorrow.

Were you trying to fit a 05 Oil tank? I remember back then there was two tanks and I think they did the change in 06 on the black engines. Something else I would like to see if it is different in each of the two different update kits?
