What tyres are you running?

Have been thru Avons and metz and more than one set of each, currently have Dunlop Direzza DZ101 on the rear and as of tomorrow I will have a Dunlop 404 on the front.
The metz and Avon both leave you without a back brake now stick a car tyre on and you can slam down on that baby all day long.
As for handling between the Metz and avons nothing much to talk about, I was getting a couple of thousand miles more from the Metz.

Hey Scot,

Laraza rides a Touring (as do I) and most of the replies so far have been from standard/classic riders with 225 rears which won't fit......I've lost the Metzeler rear a couple of times in fairly benign conditions too, and it looks like I can get the Dunlops out here in the narrower sizes for the Touring, and it will probably be a good option (especially when the Touring is fully loaded)......Are your experiences with a Standard/Classic or Touring ?

Car Tires

I ride a 2005 standard. I'm not sold on car tires. All I have learned about tires tells me that if you distribute the weight over a wider area you will have less ground pressure. Thus less traction. Why are farm tires designed in a narrow pattern for plowing (grip) and tires for flotation wider (less grip)?
Even dragster tires get narrow under speed. More bite.

I put a Toyo Proxes T1R 225/55 16 on the rear about two weeks ago. The tire is exceptional, IMO. I have run CTs on my VTX 1800s for the last three years, but this Toyo doesn't really feel like a CT to me... it's that good!
WHAT DOES a CT FEEL LIKE:confused: ;)

Phil PM me your phone number if you guys are going out this weekend, I might be able to ride over into Jersey if everything works out.

All these types of arguments have been done to death (not literally:)) cktire. Lots of anecdotal "BUT....BUT....BUT....YOU'LL DIE:eek:" theories.

In reality, of all the car tire users that I have seen over the years on all different kinds of bikes only 3 that I am aware of have gone back to bike tires. Even then, they claimed the tire simply felt "different", and they didn't like the feel. Nothing worse that that. They certainly weren't doing it for self preservation.

The most common observation from darkside users is that car tires can, on some occasions, follow road grooves more than a bike tire:(, they are far more stable in the wet:D, they last 6+ times as long:D, emergency braking is improved:D, and as soon as you have grown used to a little more counter steer they handle every bit as well as a bike tire in the twisties:D. Videos taken from underneath the bikes show that even at severe lean angles you are nowhere near up on the sidewall and always have a significant contact patch:D.

There have been no incidences that I have seen of the oft quoted "they'll blow off the rim" or reported deaths from car tire use:D (it would have been splashed over every bike site in the world had it happened)

and no....I'm not a darkside rider, but that doesn't mean I won't switch at my next tire change;).

Thanks for that Pete, was starting to get confusing! What Dunlops are you looking at?
