wanting to go darkside

GP, just a question on that topic ....
Does the IP address change with a different computer on the same internet connection? Or does it change with the same computer on a different router? I never clearly understood that one.
I have to agree with the guys on similarities ... it's uncanny. Probably NOT the same people, but you can see their point while reading the posts sometimes. Very similar patterns arise and the frequent reader can notice things like that, I sure did.

Inside your own network, that is everything connected to your router, each device will have a unique IP address assigned by the router. Once you go outside your router to the outside world, everything on your network has the same IP address. If you go to whatismyip.com and click on the 'Lookup' button next to where it shows you your IP address, you will see where you are located.

Ok, buddy. That thing said that I am in Washington DC.

Yep, it looks like you've used two different IP addresses in DC and one in Natchitoches, TN.

The location reported will be the location of your ISP's servers. If they have multiple locations, your location may vary. If you sign in from work your IP address will reflect your employers ISP, There are ways to alter your IP address, like using proxy servers.

If anybody really cares how it all works, try Google. Spend an hour reading about IP address assignment and if you don't come away feeling like you know less than when you started, I'll buy you a beer.

That offer doesn't apply to Shawn.

It says I'm in Wanonah New Jersey ... I'll have to look that up on the map.

I noticed the button on the site that says "Change your IP Address". Wouldn't that work for logging into a site under a new name after being banned?

Not likely. Your IP address will change periodically but only at the lowest level. The higher level reflects the address of your ISP.

You can click on that link and read what they're talking about in changing the IP address and see that it really doesn't accomplish much. Plus, you run the risk of hosing your internet connection. And besides, IP addresses are only one of the items in Shawn's bag of tricks that he uses to protect the integrity of the site.

Bottom line is, yes someone could go through a great deal of trouble to spoof the system. But you have to ask yourself, would you go through all that trouble just to annoy a few people you've never even met? I know I certainly wouldn't.

If I knew half of what Shawn knows about this stuff I'd be gainfully employed (in a cubicle) with no worries. I'd trust that guy with my pin numbers. LOL

Interesting stuff, thanks for the explanation. I don't see the purpose of bashing people on the internet anyway, If I really wanted a personal attack argument I'd call my mother. It's a small, small man that types to anonymous people abusive language knowing he's safe and sound behind a computer screen. I hope you guys make headway on the subject, thanks again.
