I used a magnet stick to get it once it’s free as well. Really doesn’t help get it loose though because of the oil tension.

After watching videos posted above wouldn't you use a magnet tipped stick now to extract shims rather than JUST the screwdriver?

The oil under the shim sticks them down pretty good. My magnet wouldn't do it. I use a screw driver to lift it a bit then blow air under it.

The problem with a "bigger" magnet is it is attracted to everything else around the shim, so diminishing returns.

Where I live they have a world war 2 submarine called the Silversides you can tour. It is a highly decorated battle sub. It has four, 9 cylinder opposed piston diesel engines.

Oh, which one of you can guess what SnapOn tool I cut up to make this? I'll give you a hint, it's from the 70s and I haven't used it for at least 20 years.

And the answer is......... a early GM door handle removal tool, used for window cranks also. Bought it when I worked in a GM dealership as an auto mechanic in 1975. Since most vehicles don't use these any more, it was a prime candidate for the tool having the hole and tangs close to ideal. Needed to heat the thing up to bend it since it was hardened.

I did use a rare earth magnet to snag some of the shims once loose but you needed to hold it with something to keep it from sticking to...... everything.
