This is a follow-up to my transmission troubles that started in June.
(See the threads on catastrophic transmission failure and transmission still not fixed after 3 months).
Between June 27 and September 18, the motor was torn down, the casing replaced, and the upgrade kit applied.
A few days after getting the bike back, 2nd gear cratered and would not mesh at all. Returned the bike September 25 to the dealer.
Between September 25 and October 25 NOTHING was done to the bike, except the test drive by the dealer confirming the problem. Dealer said they were waiting on direction from Triumph. In frustration, I called Peter Carlio and explained the situation (very nice guy, by the way). He only knew of the original warranty repair and not the second issue. To add further to my consternation, he noted that the dealer did not in fact perform the full upgrade kit. They only ordered repair parts for the transmission, output shaft bearing, gaskets, seals, etc.
Within a week, the dealer calls up and says the original warranty repair case had been finally closed out and now they were allowed to open up the engine for the second repair attempt. Apparently, this was the holdup. Dealer claims the full upgrade kit has been installed.
After opening up the engine the second time, the dealer reported the insides looked great and there was no visual problem (although we both clearly agreed there was definitely a second gear problem). Dealer sends numerous photos to Triumph for analysis.
GOT A CALL LAST WEEK FROM THE DEALER THAT TRIUMPH ADMITTED TO SENDING THE WRONG GEARS FOR THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR.
Parts are enroute and after about 2 days of reassembly, I expect to get my bike in about a week.
I'm having the highway bars and adjustable footpegs installed as well as the tire and brakes checked out while the beast in in pieces.
It's been an extremely long 5 months without my bike. The entire riding season and several group rides were hosed. The weekend rides have been replaced by honey-dos and hurricane repairs. I go stir crazy every time I hear or see a bike.
This is Triumph's and my dealer's last chance to make things right. I'm going to ride the dogsnot out of it and if anything breaks in the engine, then I'm trading it in on a Stratoliner S. Hope it doesn't come to that because I like my Rocket in all respects except the reliability. It will be some time before I feel comfortable venturing into BFE territory.
To those of you having second gear problems, the dealer made mention of the replacement gear having the wrong number of teeth. You will recognize the symptoms of impending failure because acceleration from a 3-to-2 downshift will often result in a "slipping" sensation and then a rapid catch.
Be careful out there. Hope I remember how to ride again . . .
