This is a follow-up to my transmission troubles that started in June.

(See the threads on catastrophic transmission failure and transmission still not fixed after 3 months).

Between June 27 and September 18, the motor was torn down, the casing replaced, and the upgrade kit applied.

A few days after getting the bike back, 2nd gear cratered and would not mesh at all. Returned the bike September 25 to the dealer.

Between September 25 and October 25 NOTHING was done to the bike, except the test drive by the dealer confirming the problem. Dealer said they were waiting on direction from Triumph. In frustration, I called Peter Carlio and explained the situation (very nice guy, by the way). He only knew of the original warranty repair and not the second issue. To add further to my consternation, he noted that the dealer did not in fact perform the full upgrade kit. They only ordered repair parts for the transmission, output shaft bearing, gaskets, seals, etc.

Within a week, the dealer calls up and says the original warranty repair case had been finally closed out and now they were allowed to open up the engine for the second repair attempt. Apparently, this was the holdup. Dealer claims the full upgrade kit has been installed.

After opening up the engine the second time, the dealer reported the insides looked great and there was no visual problem (although we both clearly agreed there was definitely a second gear problem). Dealer sends numerous photos to Triumph for analysis.

GOT A CALL LAST WEEK FROM THE DEALER THAT TRIUMPH ADMITTED TO SENDING THE WRONG GEARS FOR THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR.

Parts are enroute and after about 2 days of reassembly, I expect to get my bike in about a week.

I'm having the highway bars and adjustable footpegs installed as well as the tire and brakes checked out while the beast in in pieces.

It's been an extremely long 5 months without my bike. The entire riding season and several group rides were hosed. The weekend rides have been replaced by honey-dos and hurricane repairs. I go stir crazy every time I hear or see a bike.

This is Triumph's and my dealer's last chance to make things right. I'm going to ride the dogsnot out of it and if anything breaks in the engine, then I'm trading it in on a Stratoliner S. Hope it doesn't come to that because I like my Rocket in all respects except the reliability. It will be some time before I feel comfortable venturing into BFE territory.

To those of you having second gear problems, the dealer made mention of the replacement gear having the wrong number of teeth. You will recognize the symptoms of impending failure because acceleration from a 3-to-2 downshift will often result in a "slipping" sensation and then a rapid catch.

Be careful out there. Hope I remember how to ride again . . .

Tx Classic, Man, I feel for you. Mine was only down 2 long months awaitting the output shaft bearing last year, but it seemed like forever (june and july I think). Haven't had a major problem since though. I'd climb on it now and go anywhere without hesitation. I sure hope yours gets fixed right so you can feel the confidence I do.. Take care and good luck. xhdskip

I'm about to start down that road but I have complete confidence in Baxters in Marne Iowa to do it right the first time. Why else would I be bypassing at least 4 dealers and driving over 600 miles one way to get the job done....confidence in their ability and excellent communication.

Besides, they are No. 1 with Tomo.:D

647 to be exact. One way.

Actually, I wouldn't let Triumph of Detroit fix my toilet let alone my motorcycle and the dealer in Kalamazoo (where I bought the Bonnie) was not at all knowledgable about the problem, matter of fact played like he never heard of any problem and if there was a problem, they would have to get pre-approval from Triumph before any work was done...even though they weren't aware of a problem....to which I said BS, talked to Tomo (actually we discussed it at ES), the 2 dealers here cemented my decision...Called Baxters and talked to the lead techinician, told him what was happening to which he replied...bring it out and we will take care of it. Triumph is aware of the problem and it matters not whether it's in warranty or isn't. I've been told that Marne is Baxters and vice-versa. I'll leave the trailer there and pick it up when it's done.

Besides, Tomo and Pig9r will meet up with me in Marne and I'll buy lunch. I hear the tavern in town (every small farm town I know of has at least one tavern no matter how small the popullation is) is very good. It will be an interesting trip as I've been told that Baxters has a fantastic assortment of vintage British Iron to look at...something I enjoy doing.

Flip's Buying Lunch

Hey...... did someone say free lunch? I might be trying to sell the bike but I'm still reading all the posts.

If Tom and Brian are going up to Baxters....let me know and I might tag along in my cage.

I gots plenty of room in my car... Flipper just needs to pick a weekend after he gets some things squared away on the product development front. It will probably be Mid December which is not that far off. We will everyone plenty of notice :D

Put Dave in the front seat and Pigger in the back. Trackers have a fair amount of room. Mine does.

That's rich coming from a Scotsman!
Q How was copper wire invented?
A Two Scotsmen fighting over a penny!:D

That's a good one. I'll remember that. Reminds me of the new Jewish tires...Firestines. They stop on a dime and then pick it up for you.
