Traveling to the USA

Thanks for all the imput we are planning on 3 weeks at this stage but could end up 4 , if any of you guys have links to web sites that would be great . we are planning August September, the tail of the Dragon is definitely in my plans

There are some good tour guides round here.

In addition to the recommendation of staying at the Historic Tapoco Lodge (www.tapocolodge.com) near the Dragon, myself and others would also highly recommend the A Holiday Motel (www.holidaymotel.net) in nearby Maggie Valley, NC. Rob and Gabi have been our hosts for several Rockets Across America events. The Wheels Through Time museum (www.wheelsthroughtime.com) is only 1/2 mile from the motel.

+1 on seeing the Wheels through time museum in Maggie Valley and the Holiday motel. The blue ridge parkway North from there is a really good ride also. The New river gorge up in West Virginia is worth a visit and Hwy 16 from West Jefferson NC to the gorge will take you through the clinch mountains and through some serious WV backwoods.

Wow, the hottest part of the year. Stay to the mountains brother, less humidity and lower heat. Hopefully I will be in town when you guys come by DC. Others have mentione the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive, I highly reccomend them too. When headed north from DC, cut through the center of Pensylvania amoungst the mountains there and on into New York State. Riding in NYC is doable but not a fun experience, nor is riding in DC proper. Still, both cities have many cool attractions to see and places to visit. If you go to either of these two cities, try to be there when nothing big is going on. Wednesday is usually a good day for most DC events not to be going on. Its walking speed to leave DC on any Friday.

Cool bikes at WTT, not one Triumph there though. Strictly American made.

If your group still wants to visit DC, I can suggest that you stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Alexandria Old Town. It is a short walk to the King Street Metro Station which will get your to all the tourist sites. No need to ride the bikes into downtown DC.
Hopefully this link works: https://goo.gl/maps/qnnWC

To me (other than The Wall) DC, NY & especially Chicago are a waste of precious time that could be spent in the Smokys!
While in the Blue Ridge, take some of the roads that run east, you shall find them WAY more fun!
Ditto regarding the Holiday in Maggie Valley.

Eagle riders in Orlando will rent a one way to another of there dealers: http://www.eaglerider.com/orlando/

Riding in the Smokies that time of year will be like a car park with all the summer crowd. I would hug the coast using A1A as much as I could. No mountains but plenty of two lane blacktop and Old Southern charm. If you hug the coast and take the ferry to Cape Hatteras you will find great seafood and inexpensive beach front lodging. The city of Norfolk is an obstacle that will pass quickly as you cross the Chesapeke Bay Bridge Tunnel. Then highway 50 up the DELMARVA peninsula until you hit Salisbury then head East to Rehobeth beach and the Cape May ferry: http://capemaylewesferry.com/PlanYourTrip/GettingHere/tabid/104/Default.aspx
The coast of New Jersey is where Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, but it is the best way to ride through the state. At the north end of the state you are in New York and can hop on I80 and beeline it for Chigagohttp://www.capehatterasmotel.com/ .
