so do idiots get to buy a new ecm?

I think if you loose connection during a "load" it can screw up the brain. About the same if you pull the plug on your desktop computer, while it's writing to the hard drive. I know TuneECU has a "recover", but I haven't had to try it "YET"

I also have the silver cable with a blue plastic head from Ebay. Using a modified 20688 (2013 R3R) and only had an issue one time when cable seemed to disconnect in the middle of downloading (reading current map on ECU) a map. Did the same as you, shut bike off, rebooted PC, opened another beer, all was well.

They recommend keeping your battery on a charger while uploading or downloading.

new cable showed up today... reinstalled drivers; plugged in cable; gets immediately recognized; hook up cable and power to bike; plug into pc; start tuneecu; connects right up; read current ecu for test, works fine; download new tune 20355Map-2.hex ; bike fires right up...

and then i open the garage up to go test out and it's raining...

definitely beware if cable hiccups - it's got logic in it and can fail...
