Please Give me the Bottom Line Regarding the Rocket 3

Dan, do a search for the "upgrade kit" and you will learn about most of the Rock's early problems! As others have said, the newer models are relatively bulletproof compared to the early ones and besides, you have a full 2 year warranty plus a mfr. who stands very solidly behind their product. In other wrds, "Fuhgeddabboudit"... get out there and enjoy the ride!

Here's a copy of the service manual for most of your mechanical needs. I belive that there are some differences for the Touring model that are not included in this older manual, but it should sytill be helpful as a reference:

That is a link to the new manual with info on all 3 current versions - Classic, Standard and Touring. Some one needs to send The Bishop a copy of the manual for a Roadster.

mine is a 2005, Ive done several SS1000 on it, long trips etc,
I have about 25,000 miles on it, many of those miles 1/4 at a time.

I haven't actually had a problem, I fried the clutch after drag racing for a few nights in a row, and doing multiple passes,

BUT techinally thats a wear and tear item, rest of the hard parts on my clutch seem to still be ok.

Bigest problem is rear tires, the seem to burn off fast

No kidding. I don't ride like a banshee, but I can actually see how fast my Metzler is wearing, and I just have 3000 miles on it so far....

Definitely will be going darkside this summer sometime; I just need to decide on a specific tire.

..get one..redesigned efforts came along in 07?..and if ya wanna have the uniqueness of a true rocket 3, ya gotta get the standard or classic..it's lost on the touring..just saying.. ..

Bottom line. I rode my 05 Standard 3000+ miles to Washington DC and back last Spring during Run For the Wall. I was the ONLY Triumph in a 2000+ bike herd of Harley's and Honda's. I made it there and back no problems what so ever. I saw a lot of Gold Wings and Harley's on the chase vehicle trailers after break downs. I was towing a camping trailer to boot. It started and ran like a striped ape every morning, came through monsoon rains on the way back and it never hiccupped. Did I mention I have the triple K& N's that were being rain soaked? The bike is stout. Now you may have heard about blown tranny bearings and fuel injection glitches, true, they happen, but the warranty (even past expiration) has beeen honored in all cases I have heard of. So if you're worried the bike is a lemon most of the problems surfaced on the 04/05 models and not all of those bikes were affected. If it scares you too much, just don't consumate the deal.

Thanks for the reply guys. I appreciate the fast response. I notice several
of you stated that the problems with the R3 were sorted out in 2007. Does anybody know exactly what was done? (ie the factory switched a bearing that was prone to failure to another type that is more durable)? Changed FI controllers etc. Does anybody know where a list of this info can be found? Maybe somewhere deep in the bowels of this forum? I'm really interested because of my mechanical engineering design background, I would like to feel that this thing isn't going to grenade the trani on me a long way from nowhere.

Dan the only catastrophic failures I know of are the few of us who might have increased the horse power two fold or so. But the I believe that is still just a hand full. Perd's stressed his tranny but it did not explode :D
Par and Brembo detonated the clutch basket but then these guys have a pretty spunky turbo set up which would rip most bikes to pieces. Me well I had the tranny upgrade but then the guy that assembled mine must have had to much ale for lunch ( that's what you get when you drink warm beer. Other then that I have wasted a few pistons and liners along with some clutch components but the I do thrash my beastie and I must say she loves it :D
I don't believ you'll be sorry unless you want more power without a lot of work then the standard and my favorite the Classic will give you more.

Here's a shot of my Classic it runs well but has a hesitation at 150 but then I put her in 5th and she sets you back in the seat. Be advised power modifications can shorten the life of a few components, and could cause your face to continually hurt from grinning

Sunny Daytona 2010 42,000 miles and loven it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Brother, there's some old guy sittin' on yer bike.

Dan,

As Warp and others have said, they're pretty reliable. Of the pre-07 ones less than 5% needed the upgrade. Lots of these have been done at Triumph's expense, even after the warranty has expired.

The upgrade includes the following;

a) replace the camshaft drive chain tensioner blades and crankshaft sprocket
b) replace clutch pressure springs
c) replace alternator bolt and washer
d) replace torsional damper shaft bearings and shaft outer cover
e) replace output shaft second gear and splined dog ring
replace output shaft third and fourth gear splined bushes and two splined washers with the shoulder splined bushes
replace the input shaft Bellville washers and thrust washer and insert a new shim adjacent to fifth gear and new output shaft nut
f) replace the detent arm
replace the gear position shaft
g) replace oil tank sealing washers
h) replace the fuel tank level sender and bracket
i) replace spark plugs and HT coils
j) modify the instrument harness and main harness
k) modify the ignition switch harness and main harness connector
