Paint Job Ideas?

Seriously, I'd like to eventually have some smoke colored flames painted on my black Thunderbird. I'm also going to eventually lose the lame, stock tank emblems have the Triumph logo (as found on the Roadster) painted on each side of the tank. There's a fella on another forum that replaced his stock emblems with the Roadster emblems and they look really good. But, I think it would look even better to have that logo painted on the bike.

Daryl, I was thinking that very thing. I think the painted on version is very cool. I'm an old dirt tracker so that kinda reminds me of that old school style.

Binnsy, I kinda like the sheet metal look like an airplane, with the rivets and all.

I'm gonna go see my local airbrush artist the next couple of days and see what he thinks about attempting that over black paint.

You guys have a lot of good ideas, I appreciate it.....

here are some pic's of some of the airbrush work I have had done .... all was done without disassembling. I add a little every year sort of like Bike Tattoos I have chains down the side covers and my helmet is painted to match the paint scheme but don't have any pic of the latest additions....

Scowherd that bike looks great! That's exactly the attitude I have towards my bike , kinda like adding tattoos here and there....


I am leaning today towards the Logo on the sides of the tank idea, but with a twist. I found a paint that is white during the day, but glows aqua or blue at night. Thought about filling in those saddlebag sides with it also...where the stock two tone white is on other bikes...

Anyone remember that bike with the American/Brit flag front fender, with the skeleton ripping himself out of the center, complete with stars with visible threads that looked so crisp.... Now that was a cool paint job.

While we are at it, has anyone removed their tank badges or know how to? I may get them off of there before I head to the paint shop....

The tank badges are glued on. However, there are threaded holes underneath once you remove them. Looks like Triumph originally planned on using bolt-on badges.

I've had an issue with one of these threaded holes, where it may be just close enough to the inside surface to allow some gas vapor to seep through. This caused the paint to raise around that area. It took months for this to happen though. I had it repaired once, but it did it again later. My painter has since passed on.. So, the second time, I cut the bubble off, and covered it with one of those bullet stickers... and it's been that way ever since. The bullet sticker has stayed well and actually looks kind of cool, so I've just left it at that.

You can see the sticker in the pic below, about where the H would be on the Triumph emblem.
