Notorious Ignition Problem?

Went to start the old girl the other day and she wouldn't make a sound. Gauge lights lit up but wouldn't turn over. Turned ignition off a couple of times and she fired right up. Drove about a mile and noticed the engine light on. Pulled over and checked everything, Bike still running like a champ so I decided to just ride. When I got home I pulled the positive cable for a couple minutes and re- installed. Drove a Mile and the light went off. Great! Maybe not. Left work that evening, drove a half mile and engine light comes on....then I notice no speedometer or fuel gauge. I reached up and just touched the key (while moving) and the gauges came back. Engine light still on. I'm beginning to think the I'm having the infamous ignition switch problem that all you guys have talked about. I'm overdue for my 20k service so I'm thinking about letting them handle it under warranty. I will keep you all posted on this adventure.

Sounds like it could be the ignition switch. Be interesting to see what the dealer says. Good luck.

that is the same exact problems right before the ignition relay went bad in the side cover. When the bike would get warm I was getting these same warnings. It failed when I was 5 hours from home and had to get a 4 wheeler to pull me in front of 10k people at a rally. I thought it was the starter or the ignition switch, it was a $12 relay. I carry 2 extra now.

If they replace the switch under warranty then make sure that you get the fuel cap and seat release replaced as well so that you still have one key fitting all - as it came from the factory. Now may also be a good time to consider fitting something like the EB light kit.

I agree. I do need to get the light kit, but the Touring doesn't have a keyed gas cap or seat. I can actually just lift my solo seat right off the bike. I hope someone don't take a liking to it when I'm not around..

Eurocyclesports in Plano did me right. Gave me a complete key set.

Triumph has done some 'interesting' things.

Our seat locks on but is quick and easy to remove, R3T doesn't lock but you need a spanner to lift it. (??)
Our fuel caps lock, R3T doesn't.
Our side tins are bolted on, R3T they can fall off.

What sort of genius thinking decides these things?

British engineers that's who. Only the Germans make it more complicated. But durable...yeah right.. just ask my Porsche water pump that has to be replaced every 30,000 miles.

I bought my Rocket in Plano and they've always done a good job but the 20k service is close to 900 bucks there and RPM in Ft. Worth says the 20k is only 450 bucks so I will be visiting them this go round. He says the difference is because the valves don't have to be adjusted at 20k because they should have been set at 10k. He actually took the time to explain what all has to be done without me even asking. I've heard nothing but good things about them. Gonna give em a shot at it.
