Yes you can take a sample from the oil tank,but only if the motor is running.Don't want all that grit to settle over night,you have to keep it stired up to be fare..The sump would be best but I just had a vision of you trying to get the plug back in if you weren't changing the oil..Ha He Just messin with ya.
