Next Rocket model


That's a big part of why I would want a sixth gear.
No, not pennies out of pocket; but distance till empty.

Not worried at all about the gearing for an 8 second ride (several more on a stock set-up); or even the half hour ride. But, getting 40+ at 80mph (instead of 30+/-) while pounding out a ten hour day on the interstate or commuting to work would be nice.

My Rocket is the greatest bike I've ever been on, hands down. I love the power and see myself having two R3s (one carpenterized) in the future.
But, I have the Touring right now because I like touring amenities; and Triumph has left a few significant items off.
Not many "Touring" bikes out there without cruise or sixth gear.
 
Just thinking out loud here. but when you do the math on our bike verses the say Hardley 6 speed bikes our final out put ratio is 2.861516392:1 and the 6 speed is 2.90:1 Hmmm no matter as there is no material to make any changes in the fifth gear do to dog and mating gear problems it would create. and there is not enough room to add another set of gears and shifting forks. So your only option without being able to change rear end gearing or would be to have some one make a new set of helical gears for the trans out put and the out put drive. Because of the torsional damper goodies this would be limited I can see where you might be able to change the ratio there by inverting it. Meaning the transmission output Helical gear is a 46 tooth gear and the torsional damper helical gear is a 48 tooth thus giving the secondary drive ratio of 1.043478261:1 After a brief look at the transmission gear set it would be easiest to make a set of gears swapping the number of teeth. This way you can keep the same Diametral/Module Pitch, angle of helix, and lead and center to center distance and of the gear shafts. It looks like you can reduce the torsional damper gear by that much without affecting the dampener?

This would give you a final out put of 2.727416667:1 at the tire about a 4.3% change which would drop the 3000 rpm cruise to 2871 rpm. I am not sure if more can be done her (my be yes even if it is only by a tooth on each gear). But that would take some calculations to see if there would be enough material left not to affect the torsional damper works and strength.

WELL by now you should know the Rocket has a 5 speed gearbox and 5th gear ratio is a high as the 6th gear overdrives in other big cruisers the Rocket engine at 2300 cc has more TRQ than the other bikes and doesnt need 6 gears then we have speed limits on all the roads so you can only cruise so fast and if you travel at 80 mph your over the speed limit on most roads and travling at those speeds kills mileage as there it a lot of wind resistance on an unstreamlined motorcycle and this applies to cars and trucks also so there is no point in using even higher gearing
 
JUST no point in redesigning the gearbox according to Triumph as it doesnt need a 6 speed trans with the power it produces and the high 5th gear ratio it now has.

I think thats just what I said in my post plus pointed out the problems you would run into by either trying to add in a 6th gear or the dog mating problems if you were to try to alter 5 th gear any. since you can not do anything with the final drive unit the only thing you could do would be to change the secondary out put ratio.

Oh and I am glad triumph did not follow your attitude when they started designing the largest engine production engine. Especially since smaller engine can do the same thing.
 
Thats not my attitude as a smaller engine obviousy cannot do the same thing I say the bigger the better and give us more Horsepower so the big rocket can stomp those other smaller bikes LOL
 

The speed limits out here are 75 with normal traffic flow around 85. Even on the 2 lane roads with 65MPH limits traffic runs 75. It would be nice if the R3 reved lower for highway work.
 
I think most people who muse about wanting a 6th gear aren't saying so because they want to go faster. Certainly in my case it's because I can't see the point in sitting on the highway at 3000 rpm when the engine could easily manage the same speed at 2500 rpm or even less, be more comfortable and use less fuel (or more to the point, increase range). Simple as that. Its not that the bike needs it, rather that it could handle it. I know it's not feasible and won't happen but it still would be nice.
 
Well, I learned something today and that's never a bad thing. Still would love to see a six speed gearbox on the R3.

Decided to COMPARE MY ROCKET TO MY VOYAGER; at least the output ratios.

Fifth on the R3T is only slightly higher RPMs @ 80mph than my VV in sixth.
No tack and an extra bang each rev makes the Rocket sound like it's running at a faster engine speed.

I added a (theoretical) sixth gear at the VV ratio for the R3. I DO like the idea of 2500 RPMs at 80.

Not sure what factors are at play; but I get pretty similar MPG (39-40) between the two bikes up to about 60-65 mph. But, much worse on the Rocket above that.
From 75-80 I lose about 4 to 5 MPG on the VV and lose around 10 MPG on the Rocket.

And yes. I get a plenty of cruising at 80 miles an hour here.

As speeds increase forces increase in an exponential manner, so MPG will drop sharply as MPH increase. I get about 40-45 ish cruising at 70mph, but around town it's terrible, like 20-25 depending on how much I play on a given tank of gas.

For a long roadtrip I see no reason I couldn't get 200 miles per tank, and that equates to around 3 hours between fill-ups. By that time I am ready for a break, physically and mentally so it works out well imho. I would hate to have a 5 hour endurance per tank, then I feel like I'm quitting and breaking before I should need to.


If ANYTHING changed with gearing, I would like to be a few percent taller gearing across the entire range of gears. 1st Gear should be capable of 60mph as the Rocket is delivered, it can be done by raising the Redline to 6700, but the 0-60mph would be much better for publications/tests by magazines if the 0-60 were doable in 1 gear on the stock bike.
