Quick question for you Paul. bike has been sitting in storage for 30 years..so before i attempt to fuel the bike and start it...
reading its wise to drop sump filter on primary case and drain any accumulated oil, as oil tends to drain down from oil tank. Am I correct?
then after i manage to get the bike started, warm engine and proceed with oil change as you suggest?
Valvoline motorcycle oil ok We can also get Yamalube in 20-50 here.
And the service manual appears a bit vague on the chaincase oiling, correct to say it uses a wee bit of the engine oil as well?
sorry to blast you with so many questions!! But I just have to know!!!
thanks again
You will be correct there that all of the oil would have drained to the sump
from the engine in general, but there will still be oil in the oil cooler and lines, the tank (possibly) and the primary case.
So do as I said above re draining the various place's and replace.
The primary case oil level is maintained by oil coming through the L/H crankshaft main bearing, but an initial amount is put in there to start up, 350cc I think, check the manual on that.
The sump filter is in the center of the engine underneath, (six nuts on studs and a plate) this is the screen I mentioned.
I would drain all fluids and refill before you make any attempt to start it using the bucket and extension line from the return to tank method.
I would think that either of those oils would be O.K. check with
www.triplesonline.com but the 20-W-50 is the grade to use.
Remember that the gearbox is a separate compartment from the Engine oil, see the manual for the grade of oil for there.
No worries re all the questions, I've been building and blowing up these Engines for many years so have learnt a wee bit about them
Alloy clutch.
