modular helmets

need to find some helmets for the wife and me..

we want modular ,and would appreciate some advice..

i have a fat round melon type haed,,i wear a 2x usually ..and the wife is an xs and has more of a long narrow gord type head.

do modular helmets work well in the up position,,while riding at lower speeds,,like in town traffic?

I have the Nolan n104 and like the helmet very much.... I don't love it. Huge viewing area, pinlock system works perfect, the chin bar can lock in the up position so you can ride with the chin bar up, internal sun visor works great, fairly quiet but I find I still need to wear earplugs..... I wear them in all my helmets anyway. The only thing that I am totally dissatisfied with is the lack of air flow.... Almost non existent. The Nolan is now my second, spare helmet and I purchased the Arai Defiant as my 1 helmet.

I have a Bell Revolver that fits my Zack Thomas Square Head very well. The Black w/ white rally stripes looks awesome, and everything on it works well for sub $200 helmet. My only quibble is it's a bit loud on the highway.

I had to turn in my Nolan N104 helmet as the buckles on the side chin straps just dug into my jaw and wasn't very enjoyable (this was when I had my Harley) ended up getting the Arai CZ model but it was a 3/4 helmet. The Nolan did have a great viewing area and other than those buckles could have been a great helmet...just not for me. I currently use a HJC modular and it does a good job, has the drop down sunshade visor inside the helmet. But it does have some wind noise (most modulars do) and I also wear ear plugs when riding using it. I like having the modular part of the helmet up when I stop but it comes down when I am in motion. I believe most modulars warn that it should always be down when riding but I have seen one...I believe it is the Shark Evoline that says it can be worn in the "up" position, personal preference would rule here as I would ride with it down as I want the protection. To get a model with less wind noise effect you would probably have to go with the full face models...not modular.

The key to less noise in any helmet is correct fit, even more so in a modular. Find one that is firm yet slips on relatively easily and go a size down. They only ever get looser so start with it as firm as you can comfortably wear. The Nolan seems to have a bigger outershell than any of the others (so looks huge) but is the one most people seem to come back for and I've had very good feedback on the HJC. Although more versatile than the others, the Shark Evoline has very mixed reviews. They're all heavy and make creaking noise when handled. Shoei and Arai perhaps your best options, albeit expensive.

HJC IS Max BT has worked well for me. Although I have a Schuberth C3 Pro Intensity coming. Pricey, hope it fits. But with Revzilla, you have free shipping and can return for exchange if it does not.

Just bought a jacket and used their free exchange policy to get the correct fit.

Love my shark evokine 3! They are on the heavy side for helmets though (maybe a consideration for momma). Only helmet approved (EU and DOT) for riding in both positions.
