Lower Timing Chain Blew-up!!!!!!!

You may be able to work on it through the inspection hole, but will be a bit tight.
You can get a bit of slack on the chain, but the wear strips have an edge on them and they catch the chain a bit. As you slide the gear off, the chain tightens as there is not much play.
I took the front off mine, not too hard. A bit messy though. i stopped riding mine til I made a decision to pull it off, now its so sweet - Like brand new.

Did you use all new parts,key, gear etc and were they any different..

yer mate i got all new parts. the gear its self seems to have alot of different part numbers, i brought mine befor i heard about the one with the edge on it.Not sure what thats about.
Anyway i orderd the lastest one for my year.
Sprocket : T1140049
Clamp spacer(large nut) : T10039
M8 bolt(cup screw) : T3050061
Sprocket key : T1100045.

If you take the clutch cover off you may want to change o rings on water pump,ect.
can give you these numbers if you need them.

Crappy Pinion Gear

AV9R .Good news that Triumph are going to repair u'r bike. Me and my bro have rockets and his pinion gear broke when he was doing bout 30mph. It took a piece out of the crankshaft next to the keyway and allowed the crankshaft to turn inside the broken gear. WE removed the timing cover and had a look at the damage before we took it to the dealer (went in yesterday 19th). we won't know what the factory are going to do about it until next week but it is reassuring to hear u'r geting the repair done free . I spoke to the factory trained tech at the shop about the valves being bent due to piston/valve contact and he said that it was highly UNLIKLEY . Guess we'll have to wait till engine is stripped to find out the truth.The bike was an 04 model and it had what u call The paint can rattle from engine. The pinion gear is not held on by the large nut but by an encapsulated allen screw,the nut is only a locater that engages with the key in the crankshaft.U put spanner(snap-on of course) on to nut to stop crank rotating and remove allen bolt.

Well Jack, we've got the answer. I still think that it's a possibility to remove the sprocket through the hole. without taking the cover off using a pair of hemostats to slide the sprocket off (so long as you can get enough slack in the chain). It would be good to try than avenue and then if you can't, take the cover off entirely. Doing it that way, you don't have to disturb the valve timing at all. I believe I'd align the static timing marks and then pull the sprocket. That explains the 27Nm torque value too. The big hex nut isn't torque'd at all. It's just a means of holding the crank while you tighten the the SHCS

If it indeed will come through the hole it would be a time saver and a cheap (relative) fix.

What we really need to know is at what VIN number at at what point in time, year and month, did Triumph change the design and implement the new sprocket/key in production models?

We are assuming sometime in '06 but exactly when in '06 and what unit number. That's the question.

I suspect a lot of us are.

We are running 2 threads side by side discussing this. Jack started one called 'Help".

The 64 dollar question is; at what point, VIN number and month and day, did the Factory incorporate the 'improved sprocket and key'. There is no point in getting a new one if the new design is already installed.

Once we have a Vin number and a time stamp then we'll know what needs to be replaced and what don't and if it's possible to extract the gear through the inspecion hole, that will make it immeasurably easier.

could just go as a triumph parts guy what the part numbers are for an 04 05 06 07 it would show new part numbers for the updated part. or show a parts supercesion and might figure out when that was like part number (this) was replaced with (that) at this time. but you got to have a friend at the dealer. now to be certain that they did update the parts right?

This cat is trying to tell me that 6 of the intake valves had no clearance, yet the engine was still running fine??????? Again I say "HORSE SH*T"
If the valves had no clearance cold, then they would be hanging open when it was hot. I will have a long talk with him when I pick the bike up tomorrow. He hasn't even told me yet how much they are going to rip me for adjusting the valves. On the phone yesterday he said he had not figured the ticket up yet.
