A couple of thoughts have been expressed about a more durable spring without the sharp bends. In fact it came up at RDU in conversation (again). I'm only a mental health nurse so my only real input is "does it feel good when they wire brush the gravel rash to get the rocks out", but there must be someone out there who can build a better spring! The bloody things give me nightmares .... and I ride an '04 original. I was going to pull the front off and replace it but everyone talked me out of it.
This, in itself might reflect a bit of a Rocket philosophy ...... if its not broke ... just keep riding it .... just be gentle. Not much use to you her though, because its broke ..... there has to be a better fix.

It is a relatively simple job with minimal tools required. Don't even need to take the bike off its side stand...4 hr job start to finish for a beginner I'd reckon
Hmm - the liquids refilling really does require the beastie upright. 4 hours - if you have a supple back and good eyes.

IMO I would take the opportunity to take a close look at other things once you are inside - Clutch plates for example (mine were fine though I would have happily dropped a Barnet set in) - SAMCO water pipes and hose-clamps. And whilst you can reuse the oiland anti-freeze: Change it.

imo a more durable spring is not the solution. A different solution may be. If I had a spare block to open up - I'd be all over it - because frankly it seems pretty easy to me. I would look at getting a torsion spring made that sits axially around the detent arm. Better still would be a compression spring - but I took a look and that may be pushing things too far.

Foolish foolish man...it must be the thinner atmosphere in the north that messes with your thinking...take a look at any globe and you will see Oz points down and wraps around the bottom sooooo you simply point the front of the bike toward the south pole and point the side stand toward the centre of Oz (i like to use Uluru as my constant) and voila...your bike is sitting perfectly level. Unless you change the rear to a 55 bridgy or add longer shocks, those things **** with the entire system

And of course Oz vibrates all the time due to big bouncing Marsupials. Would have thought the Hunt system is a bit dodgy on the East coast - Or does one prop the stand on a Sharks nose?
