@Rocket Scientist Wait, do I have to take the pin at the bottom of the tank out if I'm just propping it? Or will that make it unstable? it seems that might act as a pivot point if I leave it in?

Leave the rear pivot pin in if only propping up the tank. However depending on where the gauges are, you may have to remove them.

All I know is that the bars have been raised up and it is a MAJOR PITA to get to the Allen at the top of the tank.

if your tank will not clear the gauges
if u have a pal to help u can remove rear pin slide tank back to clear gauges then replace pin and then prop.

Can you prop the tank up when the bike is on the kickstand, or does it need to be on a center stand or lift so that it doesn't lean to the left?

i think that u could use the prop anyway even if the tires was up in the air
of coarse then u probably would not need the prop

Kickstand is fine.

Haha, you'd be surprised, I had a hell of a time figuring out how to pull the tank on my Touring, I felt like a moron, I mean, it's my bike and I'd owned it years. Luckily my buddy, a life long MC mechanic was there, and... he was stumped too, LOL, We figured it out eventually.

Unscrew the two hex bolts that the tach and speedo base cover, it will tilt up to give access to the Metric hex tank bolt.
