Final Drive Assembly Replaced Running too hot?

No, it doesn't sound right for me. :?

Mine doesn't run hot like this so it might be a problem.

I went on a 100 mile run today with a Yamaha shaft drive (700 lb bike) We stopped after 50 miles. I check, buy hand, the surface temp of his rear end and drive shaft assembly. It was warm and did not feel uncomfortable to the touch. I felt mine and was unable to keep my hand on it for more than a few seconds before it became too uncomfortable. Same for the drive shaft housing.

Can someone else please see if you can keep your hand on the rear end assembly? Can someone else measure the temp? I'm running at 144F today. I measured the case and the oil temps.

Ride it like you stole it.

If it can't take that, get the faulty part replaced, pronto...

My only worry is that it may seize. Once I get concurrences on the operating temp from a few guys, I'll probably feel better.

If my bike was running, I'd try it to compare for you but from your temperature readings it doesn't sound too hot. Your ambient temperature will also affect how hot she gets. Are you running on pretty hot days?

If your oil level is ok then another thing that could be amiss is that there isn't enough grease on the bevel drive interface with the rim. You'd have to take off the rear wheel to check that though. Be unusual if they didn't grease the bevel drive but I've heard worse things forgotten at shops before.

I just had the rear end replaced on my bike for loud grinding noise. I went for a beautiful 50 mile ride tonight with the mate. I was hearing a slight humming coming from the rear end. When I got home, I put my hand on the rear end. It was too hot to keep my hand on it more than a few seconds.

Does that sound right?
Look what I would do ,get the rear wheel clear of the ground, turn the rear wheel slowly by hand ,it should be free with no tight spots or snatchiness.you should not hear any noise it should feel free.Put the bike in to 1st gear still on the stand, you should get a small amount of rotational movement back wards and fowards, this is normal backlash built in to the bevel gears.again there should be no noise ,this should be done gently ,it should feel well just right.now take it out of gear.take the top and bottom of the tyre and see if there is any movement sideways there should be none ,but remember there will be clearance movement, nothing can be tight ,you dont want any thing locking up. If the oil is topped up and you can see no leaks. I personally ,would say that it is fine.hope this helps

I'll try doing the rear wheel check. I did it initally while troubleshooting the original grinding problem...but haven't done it again since final drive was replaced.
