There is not suppose to be any oil come out. There is a "O" ring that is more of a dust barrier. While it is exposed , put a rage around it. The ring is pretty thick. Put grease it prior to putting it back in.

Next time it wont start check the oil is in the tank and not the sump. I would start the bike and let it run for a minute or two before removing any part on the bottom of the engine.
