I havent done it, but i believe a r1 coil is designed to attach without the cap.

The OP did address this.
I did mine a yr. or two ago, used a piece of rubber hose probably one to one and a half inch. Made it about two inches long, cut it long ways and kept cutting the rubber until it would wrap around the coil and complete unit would slide in the hole without flopping around. If needed, hopefully I can find extra hose for sizing.The OP did address this.
