Is there a schematic for the exhaust flow through the catalytic converter of the R3? Have any of you taken one apart? Can the converters be easily modified as in repositioning exhaust outlets? Is there any type of media within the converter for emissions control, such as the irridium pellets used in automobile converters of the 70's?

The Latest CAT Poop

Michael......... I just sent the OEM CAT to racertex and he's thinking about taking it apart and trying some different set ups. You might want to give him a shout. Just go to Member's List, click on R and there will be either an email or PM (private message) you can use to get in touch with him. He should have received it today.

Catalytic answers

Pianoman - thank you so much for the reply! I didn't expect a response so soon!! I have only been on the internet since November, and with the time available to me haven't the time to develop the skill to use the system. After riding many different bikes for about 50 years, I recently "upgraded" to a Scorched Yellow R3 and am captivated by the bike. The only significant change I plan to make is to create a two-muffler system and do not like anything available on the market, so I'm designing my own and MAY find it useful to use the cat as a locating point for the mufflers. By the way, I drive tour buses for a living and am in KC at least once a month for a casino trip, during which (since I don't gamble) I frequently visit places for parts and accessories. I was at Engles last week; probably the only customer they have that pulls a 45-foot bus up to the curb to shop! Thanks again.

Welcome Michael. I have been at Engle's when you have been there, I remember Pat the salesman joking about it, I think it was last fall.

Many of the cat boxes were empty prior to '06. I believe if your converter is stamped with a C on the side it has a catalyst is in. If it is empty it will have a Z stamped on it. I don't know of anyone who has modified the box however I have seen photos of one cut open. There are a lot of chambers inside. I think most people just get the bypass. A couple of aftermarket systems such as Jardine and Staintune either don't need or offer their own cat bypasses.

Cat question response

Wow!! Now, that had to be a coincidence for you to be at Engles when I was there, as I only make that casino run on one or two Saturdays a month! Next time, yell at me and we can swap brags about the R3!! As I was telling PianoMan, I've been riding for about 50 years and during that time once was the wholesale manager for the largest motorcycle accessory store in the world on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. I was the Triumph specialist there from about 1973-75 and have been on many cool west coast bikes, some of which today are still seen in print. Anyway, when my local dealer loaned me an R3 for a couple of weekends, I was astonished at how versatile and competent the R3 is. I was hooked. Mine was delivered last week and I then set about changing the muffler setup. You mentioned people using "the buypass". Is there something available that would eliminate the use of my cat altogether? I had toyed with the idea of welding up a three into one into two like the Raask R3, but felt the cat would at least LOOK like a neater setup if I modified it with the ideas I have in mind. Thanks for the response!!

Catalytic response

Thanks for the information. As soon as I saw the picture, I realized that I had seen that shot a thousand times when looking through the accessory catalog, I just didn't equate it with catalytic replacement, even though it clearly states to be used in conjunction with the TOR setup. I spent most of this evening trying out a couple of setups I thought I might like - a Dunstall copy with removable (tunable) baffles and a megaphone reverse cone setup that, though attractive in the catalog, looked dimunitive and puny on the bike. Both setups looked out of place on the bike; I guess I'll forget all about modifying the cat and trying to design/weld up a setup of my own and just go for the Jardines. I only know of two 3 into 1 into two pipes, with a muffler on each side for a "balanced" symmetrical look. The Raask system doesn't look (my opinion) to me like it belongs on such a massive bike, while the Jardine at looks the part, though I don't particularly like slash-cut tips. But, it's probably the only thing that is close to what I am seeking. Thank you for all your help.
