Brake fluid change - I screwed it up

This is a pretty old thread but it just popped up when I did a Google search for "Rocket 3 brake fluid". I have to bleed my rear brakes after installing a rear brake light switch. The brake seems firm enough but I think it prudent to do it anyway.

I noted that the dealership used Castrol GT LMA Dot 4 when they purged the brakes during my 30K service. The list included earlier in this post includes Dot 5 though. Can they be mixed, that is, if one is using Dot 4 can one top off the system with Dot 5? I know mixing Dot 3 and anything above is a no-no.

I am an old "cable and drum brake" vintage Triumph kind of guy and am just starting to delve into the wonderful world of hydrolic brakes.
 
I never mix brake fluids and never keep an opened bottle for any length of time

Only if you want to die.

Dot4 and Dot5.1 CAN IN A REAL EMERGENCY be mixed as they're both Glycol based - but needs flushing through and bleeding with one type as soon as poss.

But Dot5 is totally 100% incompatible. It's silicone based and actually will react causing all sorts of nasty stuff to happen.
 
Mike long time no hear or see heading my way again any time? talking about the rear brake switch mine is needing replaced also, I have it disconnected just now it does not affectmy brake light as I use both brakes all the time.
 
Just one thing about the rounding of the bleeders. NEVER use anything but a box wrench on them! They will round easily with an adjustable wrench and can even with a fixed open end. Box wrenches only for this job.

What happend to the with the polished end caps you where making up for the K&N Triple filters ?
I remember you was going to let me know when they were available
