You know you are free to ride whatever you choose..and definetly are entittled to your opinion and I respect that..I may change my opinion later but for now I choose my Metslers'.Here is an interesting article that supports your opinion and may contribute to changing mine..The Dark Side

RKTBOB, thanks for the article very interesting, hope you didnt take me serious, is all fun in here:D

why does the rear wear out so fast?

I'm hearing that the rear wears real fast. Is it the weight? Torque? Corning hard? What about the front? Great bike but what an expense.:mad:

This is the R3T forum so assume all comments apply to the R3T.

It seems most get around 8,000 - 10,000 miles out of a set of R3T tires. I've gotten about 8 from Avons and 10 from Metz. There are exceptions, like the OP who got significantly less. Various reasons can account for that, like road compositions, tire pressures, speeds, ambient temps etc.

It kind of follows that if you are going to spend 15K+ for a bike that you should also be able to budget for tires. Sport bikes costing the same will get 1/2 the mileage from a set of tires at best. This kind of mileage is the best I've gotten on any bike in the last 30 years so I feel its quite a bargain.

5900 out of my last metz!

Hello fellow RT3ers,
I hear a lot of talk about going to the dark side... I would love to save the money and get the tread life out of a tire. Can someone please help me out with the pros/cons of installing a car tire on my 2010 R3T. I guess my biggest concern would be going into turns on a square tire. what do you think?

Asking what folks think about this topic can be a bit dangerous. Its kind of like asking about their mothers. Anything close to a negative comment will draw the wrath of the believers.

Mounting a car tire is not something I've considered. Perhaps its because this is my first, and likely last, cruiser type bike and I'm not real crazy about the effort it takes to make something this big handle well. From everything I've read a car tire wants to stand up in turns. Having to apply constant counter steering to maintain a turn is not a habit I particularly want to acquire.

That said, if cost and mileage are your primary concerns, then it may work for you.

Once you get used to it, you won't even know is there, the cons are minimal in my opinion, we rode from here to Maggie Valley 3 months ago, roughly 2800 miles round trip, at least 1000 of those miles were curves, some of them so sharp that you had to scrape your pegs, out of 75 bikes at least 30 had car tires, everybody was having a blast and never heard anybody complaining about poor handling, if you make it to Marble Falls next month you can see them in full action:)
