09 R3T Price Opinions Please

Hello all,

As the title says I'm looking at an 09 R3T 2 tone. Appears to be in excellent condition, under 6,000 miles. Assume tires are original so will need replacement given the age. Curious about opinions on what would be a reasonable price to pay. I've reviewed NADA ($6,800 ave retail, $4,700 trade in) and KBB ($5,600 ave retail, $4,200 low retail). Dealer's asking $7,999 which on the surface appears way too high.

Would appreciate opinions on what a reasonable price to pay is. I don't mind paying a bit extra for what I'm looking for but I also am not interested in paying a couple grand more than I should.

New to these bikes and don't want to get hosed so would greatly appreciate any input.

what sort of money are they asking for it?....Has it been riden or stored? If it was stored it may be wise to do all the oils..both the engine oil (the engine oil and gearbox are just the one oil) and final drive....brake fluid...coolant...brake pads....
 
Thanks for the reply Tal. I'll likely need to do the fluids though they were going to look into getting the maintenance history from the guy that traded it in so hopefully I'll be able to get some additional info. As mentioned above, they're asking $7,999.

On the high side, but there is probably some advantages to buying from a dealer, as far as recourse, and knowing the bike was probably checked out, I guess it depends on personality type.
 
...bugger...i went back and saw that sorry....throw an offer to him but have a back up bike to use as leverage maybe?...If the bike is a minter and runs real nice you wont be sorry once its yours...if you spend a couple of hundy more than you want to initially, the smile you develop when riding it will erase the pain..just sayin...
I usually keep my bikes up to 20000kms then look at selling while the price is still holding...but if its a keeper you want it dosnt matter too much about mileage as long as it has been loved and runs smooth...good luck..
 

Was the bike a trade in at a Triumph dealership? If so, they paid less than 4200 for it. Pick up the Vin# and search it's owner history. How big is the buyer market where you live? If you fall in love with the bike, you are going to pay too much but walk away happy. No matter how good it looks it's going to require maintenance. 1 to 2 K the first year. The rule of thumb is offer half of asked and walk away at your budget. The Rocket torquey ride satisfies. Hope this helps. Good luck.
 
Thanks for the quick responses, good info. Yes 1K9, it was a trade. I'm guessing your correct, they probably paid close to $4200. Would have scooped it up in a second for close to that. Market here is decent in general but this is a crappy time of year for selling a bike as we're rolling into winter. We'll see, think I have a pretty good idea of what I'd like to pay - and I'll definitely walk away if the deal doesn't make sense. Thanks again for all the input, really appreciate it.
 
FWIW; NADA, KBB, et al have little bearing on reality when it comes to motorcycles. Additionally, motorcycle prices are even more location variable than cages, and are also seasonally affected. The good news is December is a buyer's market for bikes.

I agree, I buy and sell a lot of bikes, and read the Craigslist motorcycle ads almost daily sometimes, and I've found KBB and such, at least as far as motorcycles, to be almost random number generators.
 
The "blue book" sources tend to run way low, so I was really sweating it when I had to do a total loss claim on my 01 Suzuki 1500LC. Since upping to full coverage after having a bike stolen a few years ago, I had been saving screen shots of CL ads in case I had to fight over a valuation. Here's a quick plug for Markel: they covered the bike and all the accessories (I didn't have much in the way of documentation, just gave them a list with what I remembered paying for everything) and the total came to almost exactly what I paid for the Rocket! Right what one would expect to spend on buying one off CL and kitting it out again.
