Wifey vs. Speedmaster

I put a couple of pics in my gallery . . here is one. It is black fenders with red and gold .

I dont know if I'll sell it yet . . I really want to see about the trike. She wants to ride really bad but . . just dont know.

My daughter is wanting to learn to ride also. She is 25 and only 5'2" about 115 lbs, and not much arm strength, so I'm trying to find a bike that she could learn on but yet keep up on the road when we go for rides. This is proving to be somewhat difficult. I've looked at Rebels, Buell Blast, and a Suzuki S40. I wish Triumph made something around the 500cc and 375# range. She sat on a Bonnie, but it sat too high and too big for her. any other thoughts?

A Speedy or America is several inches lower than a Bonnie.

I don't know if Suzuki still makes the 650 Savage but I remember it being rather low in the seat. It's a thumper so it might not be so great on the highway.

Danno-

I don't know if it's a possibility in Lincoln, NE, but my daughter is under 5' and I set her up with a Guzzi Breva 750. You can get a low seat, I put on a short set of shocks and lowered the clamps on the fork. It handles great, is good for all day rides and it doesn't have the sharp throttle response that causes trouble for a lot of new riders. Just an idea.

Those things are pretty cool . . there is a shop here locally that has them and I have a friend that works there. He says they are almost impossible to roll or get out of control. They have a computerized braking system that stops skidding. That would be a GREAT answer if I could afford one . . heh.

Deb and I talked last night and I think we are going to try the "Insta-Trike" kit. I got an email back from them yesterday and they say they have a kit for the 800 Amereica/Speedmaster. The new ones are 900 but I think that the frames are the same . . I'm checking on that. Probably wont be able to save enough for it until spring but she'll keep riding the Rebel out in the field until then. Plus we have a bunch of backwood roads through the forest around here. Sooo. . . . I hope this works out.

Booger, I taught Lisa to ride 2 years ago. At first, I thought she maybe shouldn't ride. Seemed like she just couldn't get the hang of it. She came around suddenly [After a couple of months and a couple of drops.] and started to ride much better, then we took the MSF safety course and she never looked back. She rides really well, now.

Danno, Lisa is only 5'2", although she is pretty strong. Her first bike was a 96 intruder 800. Was very light and easy to ride, plus had enough guts to keep up.

She actually went through the MSF course and did really well. It was on a smaller bike and in very controlled circumstances but she passed with flying colors. Maybe I'm just being to cautious with her. Like I said . . I cant really afford the trike kit right now and maybe in a couple of months she will come around and do fine . . Just scares me a little . .

If she wants to ride really bad.. Let her keep riding. I don't know your area, but if she's headed to the corner store for milk, have her take the bike. If she's going to check the mail, have her take the bike, any small errands. Get her some small saddlebags, so it's more convenient for her to use.

The only thing that will make her a better rider and remember all the things it takes to ride a bike (i.e. put your feet down when you stop) is for her to ride her bike as often as possible. That's a beautiful Speedmaster by the way!

I first had my wife ride her bike with me around our block, and then down to the corner store. Then, when I saw that she was pretty comfortable at that, I had her taking the bike on her own around the block and to the corner store. When she was comfortable with that, we signed her up for a beginner's MSF course (Glad your wife took that.. you learn alot, and they are pretty fun!). She then went and got her license. Then we started going on farther rides around our area, 30-60 miles or so. When she got comfortable with that, I had her start riding with me into San Antonio, on the Loop, on I-10, etc, down town traffic also. Exposing her to all kinds of situations. I can say now, that she is a very, very good rider. I have absolutely no problem with her taking her bike anywhere. Oh.. she also moved up from her 750 NightHawk to the 1200 Trophy she now owns..
