I meant timing for 93 octane is set oi fire sooner then 87 octane so if 87 fires on the timing of 93 higher risk of detonation will occur do to the longer burn time of 93.
I do know that Richard stated that if I run lower octane timming must be retarded.
I am sorry for the confusion.

I was thinking with your mech exp that was what you meant ... (I was hoping) lol

Spending a number of years in a shop listening to regurgitated oil company propoganda I had to ask ... if there was a commercial that said there were electronic detonation chips floating in Amoco gasoline, there would be *******s asking me if they clogged the filter.
Can you tell I don't much care for the junk they pass off as gasoline here in the US?

I'm running Regular 87 octane and have since new.
They had her filled with premium when I got her, but I could tell from the "smell" it wasn't getting all burnt, so I switched.
No problems from the gas so far.
Now ethanol, I don't like to run, and the Shell stations still have "real" gas.

Wayne at Power-Tripp performance had mentioned to me once about switching to ethanol do to it running cooler he said it would cut down on detonations. But I am opting for a intercooler/radiator combo instead.

Back in the day we used to actually "spray" an alcohol/water mix into the carb for detonation control on a ford SVO turbo. At 18lbs of boost it was the only way to slow the flame and protect the piston heads. It was not used for fuel. There just is not the same amount of energy available in a gallon of gasoline vs a gallon of alcohol, and the **** oil companies know it. Less energy equals less distance traveled on that gallon which equates to more gallons used. They want us to believe that it is better for the environment due to lower emissions ... sure there are lower emissions, exactly less as burning 90% of the gasoline as compared to 100%. Emissions are lowered by 10%, well thats because there is 10% less gasoline in the mix which equates to about 6% less power available from the fuel. How many of you have spent hundreds of dollars for some piece of performance equipment for a 6% increase in power? Too bad it's right there at the pump if only it was full of real gasoline. We are such suckers.

Those Alcohol fuel funny cars do use it for fuel, and it does run cooler. They idle at the line quite a while with no radiator. Of course they are pumping so much through the engine at once, it takes nearly 20 gallons to run up the track once. But thats why they do it, you can get 1500hp out of a near bare block it saves alot of weight. Nitro cars are bombs on wheels, the exhaust gas temps are so high that the flame you see from the exhaust is actually hydrogen being split off water molecules in the air. Fision. Some trivia you can use later in life.

I don't have the manual in front of me, but I'm certain it says 87 octane is minimum, not 89.

RocketDaryl,

You are correct. The manual does state 87 for the R3T. That is what I have been running with no isssues at all. That is one of the good things I like about the R3T versus my old R3. The old R3 required Premium. I will admit I did run 89 occasionally and it seemed to run OK but mostly I ran Premium.

I run 87 in my R3T. The only time I have issues is under heavy acceleration... and it's above 110 deg F!

For Captain Bob, I believe the Standard and Classic models only required 89 octane not premium.

That was one of the reasons in 08 that I went with my Mustang GT...it ran on regular while the Mazda Miata and RX8 both had to run on premium. Also another reason I haven't really been "dying" to have a Harley...the Ultra Glide Classic (in 03) needed to run on premium while the Gold Wing with a much better engine only required regular.

Ive now run two tanks of 87% and decel pop is terrible. These hot Mad Dogs have amplified it. The acceleration rap is awesome but the droning-on is terrible under a full skid lid. Anyhoot, I shalt not try to save a dime when heading towards possibly wasted engine life. I don't know if loud is where Im at any longer:(

And I believe Molinoman is quite correct. 89 Octane was the requirement; 89 by the USA mode of measurement.
