Well it certainly makes sense to have it there, that hose must take more stone abuse than any other part of the bike. I have the "angel bell" at the front of the block and it seems to ring all the time from road debris. If sh*t hits the bell that often then it hits the hose at least as much if not more.
Wouldn't that suck to have a nail thrown from the front tire pierce the water pump hose? If I can think it up, it's probably already happened to someone.

If you ever have to replace the hose, I hope you save the old slinky and at least try to put it on the new one.

I have an 08 and I got the slinky.
It never occurred to me it was a stone guard.
Makes sense ;-)

Yes, it makes sense to have it and makes no sense that they dropped it off the later models. However, you can get one from bikebandit. Part No. 1392258, $7.62.
