TuneECU, ECU on Roadster is not responding anymore


great to hear! strange solution but doesn't matter...
I always unplug fuse #9 20A for Headlights and starter solenoid. no problems.

If you feel up to it, can you du a tune download with this fuse unplugged just to
confirm that this config will work for you as well?

when that is done I suggest we write a sticky about how to prep the bike for a tune download.

Since the Roadster is only 6 months old there are very few tunes created yet.
Power commander does not work on the roadster, no luck finding a tune there..
Tuneboy works, but it seems that Wayne MacDonald has seized to create tunes nowadays...will check his website later on for progress.

there are 2 OEM tunes posted for the Roadster. stock and TORS i.e. open silencers.

my recommendation would be to take this map, 20355, and use for the time being. jardines vs tors, best guess is that it should work.
regarding new air filters, do the 12 minute tune, that should give the ECU a fair chance to adapt to the new flow and would be sufficient.
anything else, you have to do on dyno.

since so little 3rd party hardware works on the Roadster, it would be difficult to hook up on a dyno. mr. Power-Tripp does this though, I think.
invest in the Tubeboy, which can be connected to a dyno, I don't know right now..


oh, in the tune that I posted and something that you can do yourself, the secondaries are open 100% on all gear, all rpm. the vanilla way instead of removing them!

Really? Why is that? Is it that much different than an '09?
The word was that a GiPro wouldn't work either, but it turns out that it does.

That's only partially correct on the GiPro (I did the testing for them on the Roadster). The bike ECU knows what gear it's in base on certain voltages being sent down a particular wire. These voltages are somewhat different on the Roadster. Some settings on the GiPro confused my bike .. it would flip back & forth between a couple of gears, not being certain what was right (the R3R's built-in gauge allows this to be easily checked). For other settings it just was wrong (the bike thought it was in 4th, but the GiPro was trying to tell it 5th).
Using the tests, they modified a GiPro for the R3R and are sending me the test unit now.
If it works, we'll have a GiPro for the R3R, but it will be a slightly different unit, from an electrical standpoint.
 
I’ve called PC and Dobeck, and they say that it would not (them saying this could protect them, if anything should go wrong with the unit or bike) work on the Roadster???

All R3’s use the same OBD connector, I do not see why it would not work for this app.

This might be a way for PC/Dobeck to make some extra dollars for each unit, have been half tempted to buy a PC III to see if this would work because the PC V does not look like it will be coming out any time soon.

Ok, I did test the GiPro, but that was safer.
 
I found that the "flipping" between gears on the display was a result of slight differences in the GPS values from bike to bike. Going through the setup process will take care of that problem typically. I knew the Touring model had the extra wire just like the new Roadster but because of the way Triumph altered the ECM programing for different gears to get their HP and torque numbers, I wondered how that would effect setting up the GiPro. It sounds more complicated than I thought it would be, is everything going to work out ? How well did it work for getting the low gear power back? What you told us about how the two gear position indicators (bike and Pro) work when installed sounded pretty cool to me. I like having that kind of information displayed even though it isn't really what gear the bike is in, just more information about whats going on. Your endevor has me intersted and I hope you keep us informed about what changes they make to the new unit. The Roadster is unique in the fact that the software is tailored mainly to get HP numbers in one gear and Torque numbers in another, good luck working it out.
 
Well thats the neat thing about PCIII, you plug it in. So if it doesn't work out you can always take it off, no foul. There are some used units floating around out there, maybe you can get one of those to try out.

PC wont work on 09 or 10 according to themselves. I have had a couple of email converstations with the manufacturer. here are some quotes.

My questions:
can you confirm or deny that a PC3 will work on the Triumph Rocket 3 Roadster -2010 as well as earlier models?
the reason I ask is that since I need to retune my Roadster very soon and still do not have access to the PC5, I have to look for a different solution.

I do not have an estimated release date for that unit. I would not be surprised to see it come out after a year. We have not released one for the 09 model, yet either.

When I first hooked up the GiPro (set for the R3), everything was confused. It thought that first was fifth, 2nd was 1st, etc, so I had to do the manual gear learning. At that point I had the 'flipping' due to those voltage variances.
I kept it on setting 2, which had the bike thinking 4th gear. I did notice a difference, as fourth is set for open secondaries until upper RPMs.
What I don't know is if the ignition timing meant anything, or if it was all secondaries. Now I guess I need to set the GiPro back on setting 2 (right now just on passthrough) now that I've 'opened' the secondaries via TuneECU. This should, in my mind, have a net effect of only changing ignition timing to reflect 4th gear, in all gears. Then I can see if I feel a difference with only that ignition timing change. Ya?
