Just a quick question on making the exhaust quieter for inspection. I have a2006 Classic w the silencer upgrade A9600160 and silencers A9608060 Good ole Delaware has decided the bike is too loud their limit is 96db and my readings came out at 105db Now I don't think the bike is loud at all but this wonderful law here says it is . Any quick fixes or do I need to go back to stock just for inspection and then back again? (Thank God I can get it inspected for 4 years!) Thanks
How do the measure the sound? In a garage or outside in the open? At idle or rev'd? If you put the stock items back on, as it came from the factory, and it still fails, what then?
Any chance of moving to a less... I'm going to take care of you whether you like it or not....state?
They measure with their sound machine inside the inspection lane at 2500 to 3000 rpm according to their spec sheet they take into consideration the enclosed area and deduct a % for that. I've heard cars louder than this bike. but De is here to take care of you with their stupid mindless laws.
you could probably change out 2 of the 3 pipes and pass.. the left side is the noisiest and then remove one on the right side to make them line up properly, think its the bottom one.. that ones easy as you dont have to remove the frame cover, just unbolt it and slide it out.
I did that for a while just for a change and it was quite nice. it also cut most of the decel popping, it did cut the HP though so Im back to 3 tors and no cat.
Back in the day, when I got a 'loud' fix it ticket we just used a broom handle and stuffed some steel wool up in the pipes. It would blow out real easy when you got on it after leaving the donut shop where you had the ticket signed off. Would not want to try that these days, I'd be afraid it would blow out when I was trying to do the test, and the mounties might fail to see the humor.
All went well at DMV Switched back to stock pipes and went right on through. They didnt even test the db level. Could it be a Harley owner was working that station, well he liked the bike anyway. off to switch back and go riding its 44 in Delaware Ride on!
If they don't do much of a visual inspection
IF this is a yearly inspection.
You might try this, cheap & fast trick.
Buy steel wool @ grocery store ( not brillo none soap )
or maybe lowes or home depot.
Bend a thick wire V shape
Place in muffler like this < to help hold steel wool packing in
just incase
Make up 3 wads cigar shape about 6 " long
firmly packed ( so exhaust can flow & bike is quiet ) some testing
required @ home @ 3000 rpms
Have 3 clips made up
twist roll ( screw ) insert cigar shape packing in mufflers
add clips safety measure not to get caught cheaping .
When close to inspection station stop put them in
TEST / pass
Drive away STOP have needle nose in pocket
so don't burn fingers.... pull clips & packing
Let cool for a few seconds maybe 2 minutes max
Pull back in bag save for next yr inspection
less time & work
