If seriously injured when a helmet would have mitigated or prevented it, what about the taxpayers who are forced to pay the humongous medical bills?
Perhaps a requirement to post a million dollar bond if you choose to not wear a lid?
Just sayin' . . .

Riders who choose not to wear a lid, should be assigned to their own, exclusive risk pools and charged honest, actuarially calculated rates for the added risks that they currently get away with spreading out to helmeted, hence better protected (statistically) riders and fellow insureds.

Florida is a helmet state but if you are over twenty one you can choose not to wear a helmet if you have a insurance policy for $10,000 specifically for motorcyclist related accident now 10,000 will not even get life flight to spin its rotors.
In Florida the police cannot stop you for not wearing a helmet as it is a secondary offense but if they stop you for any thing else the first thing they will ask you for is proof of insurance for no helmet, my fellow MSF coach is a Lt in the sheriffs department and has yet to have anyone show him proof for not wearing a helmet.

When you get that bill passed, don't forget to add a million dollar bond for smokers so taxpayers don't have to cover all the medical expenses incurred by them later on in life.

I for one do not really care if you choose to wear a helmet or not that is your choice to make. I did find out the hard way many moons ago that my head is not tougher than the pavement. Since then if the leg goes over the helmet is on the head. No one has to pass a law for what should be common sense.

Laws aside, I just don't understand how someone can ride where bugs are in the air, and rocks thrown up by vehicles ahead, and not wear a helmet. The crash protection is nice too, but the helmet reminds me nearly every time I ride that I need it anyway, with every tick on the face shield and bit of goo I have to deal with when I stop.

We need to pass laws limiting cell phone use while driving. Until it happens I see deaths continuing to rise.

I wear a helmet but folks that don’t want shouldn’t be forced.

We have laws against cell phone use here, with significant fines and demerit points, and I can tell you, it doesn't work. The law is only effective if a) people abide by it and/or b) it is enforced. There is not a day goes by that I don't see a bone head move committed by someone on the phone.

I'll stay out of the mandatory helmet debate (it is mandatory here) but I can tell you I would never ride without one.

I just looked it up. This is in Ontario for what they call, "Distracted Driving". That includes cell phone use, programming GPS etc etc...

• a fine of $400, plus a victim surcharge and court fee, for a total of $490 if settled out of court
• fine of up to $1,000 if you receive a summons or fight your ticket
• three demerit points applied to your driver’s record.

Like I said, even this doesn't work

Brilliantly put. If I could be a little more blunt; not wearing a helmet is both stupid and vane. Raincoats aren't mandated but I bet almost everyone who won't wear a bike helmet will still cover up to keep a little rain off themselves. Of course there are those who prefer to look like a pirate and wear bandanas and masks, showing that they're keener to keep a few bugs off their faces and their hair neat than protect their brain. Not meaning to offend, but what does that tell you?

Wearing a helmet should not be up to the individual.
