the drain plug bolt

Aren't those plugs prone to breaking? Isn't there some special way to prevent ruining them?

Its not the plug, its the thread that it screws into. You can get a helicoil in there but it is very thin.
Very low torque specs.
Mines due to be done soon ,but I will be using a big syringe to remove the old oil and leaving the bolt in place.

Don't want to get in a bun fight, but the weak link is definitely the plug not the thread. There are at least 6 full threads @ 1.5mm pitch inside the alloy housing, they would take a lot more stripping than the grooved under head diameter of the plug takes to snap off. Although I haven't measured the torque needed to snap the plug, going by photos that I have seen I reckon it will go at not much more than 20Nm.

I have a spare Triumph plug which I wont ever use, I will test it and find the minimum torque needed for it to snap.

Yep, I snapped my one some time ago. When I had a look at it the hole drilled down the middle to fit the magnet was drilled to deep and literally broke into the root (bottom) of the thread, there was only about .020" (20 thou) wall thickness at this point.
