g,day gents, tacho playing up wrong reading and not returning to zero bike is running fine ,I have searched the threads on this problem and checked most plugs and connections, I would like to know if the plug at the back of the tacho pulls out, I tried but did not want to pull it too hard just in case i wreck it any advice would be welcome, 09 r3 standard, thanks

I had the same problem a couple years ago. Check all the fuses. In my case the previous owner had wired the accessory clock up incorrectly and blown one of the fuses. Then they replaced it with one of those fuses with the led in them that shows you that it is blown. Then they must have blown it again. Long story short is that the led will pass enough voltage so the tach will synchronize sometimes, sometimes it will just float around like it has no idea what it's doing. I just happened to be looking at the fuse block when I switched the key on and noticed a tiny dot of light in one of my fuses. Put in the correct fuse and no more problems. Hope your problem was as easy to fix as mine. Keep us posted.

tacho

checked all plugs fuses, coils, need to know how to pull the plug from the back of the tacho, pulled it apart but the plug wont budge dont want to pull to hard in case i strip the wires, I want to take the tacho to a auto instrument repairer to see if he can fix it, but i cant get it apart from the harness, any ideas? tthanks

Gday mate, yep. if you are talking about the square orange or grey plug ( cant remember which was tac and which was speedo) but YES, you can wriggle it out and back on.

As others have suggested I would check the 30amp fuse. long story short I had probs with mine and discovered the female plug connecting to the acc fuse was loose. Replaced both and now 100%.

Ken it is a good iea to clean and inspect all your fuses every month or so . Especially if you on a coastal environment. I use a item that resembles a eraser only it impregnated with diamond Particulate it actually looks like a eraser. I clean all fuse terminals and lubricate them with dialetric grease. the nore I do it the less problems I have..

Good luck and do not rely on the dealer as they do not have much of a technician pool to choose from. In fact most technicians have as many brain cekks as God gave a rubber frog!!! Its not the dealers fault its the technicians fault for not having pride in their workmanship and do not spend the time to expand their knowledge base.

tacho update

still have problems, inspected and greased all plugs and sockets, cleaned speed sensor and crank angle sensor, still the same. the good news is triumph aust said they will fix the tacho if it is faulty, nine months out of warranty so i am pretty happy, will talk to dealer next week to see when i can take it in. will post update when its fixed.

Sorry I didn't notice this thread earlier. Sounds like a good outcome though. Triumph Aust is often good for "goodwill" fixes. Just hope the dealer's up to it and doesn't cut corners attempting to profit from it.
