Suspension Upgrade

I've had both the 440's and 418's ... the 440's are nice looking, good ride and easy to adjust the preload since they are threaded. They are also pretty expensive.
The 418's are less money, have notched preload adjustment just like the stock shocks but have adjustable damping via a dial at the top. I returned the 440's in exchange for the 418's ... I found that the adjustable damping fit my needs better. It's too bad they've discontinued them and they are now difficult to find.
I have no experience with the 430's.

I suggest that you DO opt for HD springs. Had regular springs in a set of 440's and they would bottom out occasionally 1up and always 2up, currently have HD springs in set of 418's and they are excellent.

12 stone(170lbs) single rider DO NOT get the Heavy Duty springs I made that mistake quite a few years ago and had to send them back to change them, over 200lbs or a lot of two up riding yes but a skinny big boy like yourself no way .:D

There appears to be a divergence in opinion. Scot in Exile - what was your experience with the HD's?

Also - what is the difference b/w the 418's, 430's, 440's etc.?

I was also thinking about changing my shocks I'm 165 , 170 wet:) What shock would I go for ? some times my wife rides with me and she is 120, 125 wet:) But I want a chrome cover on it don't want it to see the springs.
So what one would be good for me?

Also noticed that the progressive shocks come in different sizes from 11.5 to 13". What size does one get?

Depends on what you want to do to your ride. OEM is 12.5" I believe. Going up in length increases ride height (and ground clearance), shortens trail and improves low speed handling. Going down in length increases trail, improves straight line handling and lowers ride height (and ground clearance).

If you're short legged going down 1/2" is OK to lower the ride height without too much impact on steering or ground clearance.

Hagon's can be bought at 13.4" and is the MAX length you can put on.

I like the Ohlins or YSS heavy duty variety. I'm 285-290 pounds. I ride hard and heavy. I need a sturdy support suspension. I like the look of the Ohlins as well. No direct application that I know of but I HAVE seen an R3 or two sporting them. I also prefer lowering ride height.
