I can only share my experience but I don't know if it actually answers your question Wrecka.
Last week I chopped my TORS 3 into 2 (shotgun on one side only) chopped them in half as it was too long for the look I wanted "Naked Mad Max". Although Mel Gibson may be a bit old now.
I also cut and re-welded the baffles to suit. I made the mistake of not bolting the baffles in as I felt they were pretty tight to slide in. Took a short ride around the block to test performance and to see if the baffles rattled. Frikin lost one!!!! The performance went to sh** like no power at all on hard acceleration, I mean NUTHIN, almost unrideable unless you rode it like a little old granny. The deceleration pooping was extreme and backfiring too, a definite no no as you could easily bend a conrod with an explosion of unburnt fuels. This was so bad, I immediately booked it in for a Dyno Tune.
Anyway, so I made another replacement baffle and the bike instantly ran like a dream, absolutely perfect.
Upon further research it appears all motorbikes and in particular our Rockets are EXTREMELY reliant on precise and exact back pressure not only for optimum performance but also just to run at all.
I'm no expert but I hope this sheds some light on how delicate the exhaust flow is to achieve the perfect tune.
