Good plan..I have a little device/tester that shows the draw down voltage when starting. It uses LEDs and the lowest voltage LED stays lit to show the voltage. It shouldn't go below 9 volts when cranking according to my tester. If it does, things are questionable.i am guessing that you are hearing the starter solenoid
i am thinking that you are not getting enough voltage to the starter to crank the motor all the time.
check battery voltage while trying to start
like what was said battery needs to be tight.
or bad battery
how old is battery?
