Probably sequential for all their bikes, not just the RIIIs.

Last six digits of the VIN are the sequential for ALL vehicles!

SINCE 1981 that is.

12th to 17th characters- VIS - Vehicle Identifier Section. The last 8 characters of the VIN are used for the identification a of specific vehicle. The last four characters shall always be numeric. Identifies the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled off the manufacturers assembly line.

Makes no sense to me . . .
The last six of the 17 digit vin # are the sequential.
This one shows 208240. Even if it all started with 208000, this would be #240???

Upon further investigation, I have found this to be a bogus vin#.
Mine is approx 206890.
I think that what Ian is getting at is that Triumph may have built a few Speed Triples and Bonneviles etc in between the Rockets as they tend to build bikes in bunches according to demand.

the letter says that it's one of the first 200 sold in the United States not that it's one of the first 200 made. So the VIN# should not matter.

excellent point made by forklift, here i was assuming it was one of the first 200 made, but it is only 1 of the first 200 to be sold in the good ole usa! forklift, you are a smart mofo, but then we already knew that, cuz you bought a rocket 3 instead of a harley ****in davidson.;);)
