I was in contact with Peter Herrington ( Meerkat Mufflers) and he sent me this info for DIY method.

I am one of those guys that like the look of the sock exhaust. I just haven’t seen anything yet that looks right to me, just my opinion. I’m sure there are plenty of guys that don’t like the look of the stock pipes.

So I just finished a more involved version of this mod with the help of Peter (meerkat exhaust). First off, I can’t overstate the immense help Peter has been. He has been so helpful and patient with with my multitude of questions and emails. What a great guy.

I would have gladly had him do the mod if it wasn’t for the fact that he’s in Australia and I’m in the USA. For that reason I decided to do it myself. I refer to this mod as the “mod 2" as it is different than the original mod offered by Peter @MEERCAT . The biggest difference is that this mod still retains the use of the Cat so therefore you do not cut part of the inlet tube that goes to the cat. The second difference is that you remove all 3 small outlet tubes instead of simply cutting them out internally. This is easy with a plasma cutter. Without a plasma cutter I think it could be done with a hole saw but I suspect it could be a biatch, especially the left side outlet tube. Keep in mind that the large black slash cut external exhaust tips need to be removed for this process and then re welded on once the small tubes are removed.

In my opinion, the hardest part is the opening up of the bulkhead that is on the right side. I decided to cut a significant part of the exhaust box to access this. I found it to work out well. Doing this simply added some more welding work but it made much easier to upen up the bulkhead. All and all this was a fun experience. You need a welder, plasma cutter, sawzall, grinder, hole saw and a slow turning drill AND A LOT OF PATIENCE.

I decided to do the more involved mod as I liked the idea of retaining the use of the cat. Maybe I’m getting old but if I can get a nice sounding exhaust and pollute less by keeping the cat, that’s a win for me. Another reason was that according to Peter, this mod sounds better. The nice part is that ALL the welds are out of site so nothing needs to be pretty. I’d say the only thing that needs to be semi uniform is the new larger outlet holes as you can see the ones on the right. The one on the left is harder to see. I decided to grind the welds anyway but it is not necessary.

I have not installed the exhaust back on the bike yet so I can’t comment on the sound as I just finished painting it. I will be reinstalling it tomorrow and will follow up on the sound.

Interested to know how this sounds. As Peter doesn’t charge lots for this mod, I was going to ship mine up to him to do as I’m ****e with a welder! 😂
I just started her up but couldn’t go for a ride as it is raining/wet snowing. I’d say it has deeper tone and I’d estimate it’s about 30%-40% louder. Probably about halfway between stock and something like the Competition Werks slip ons. Looking forward to taking it for spin. Unfortunately I don’t have a GoPro so I have no way of recording it.

I tried doing a short video with my phone and it didn’t do it justice.

So I was finally able to go for a short ride...Pretty happy with the mod. I’d say the bulk of the increase in sound is at lowish RPM’S Under 3k . I didn’t do a before and after with the decibel meter. With the mod it idles at 78 decibels and has significantly deeper tone at low RPM’s(under 2800 rpm). Above that it sounds similar to stock but louder and slightly deeper tone.

Interestingly, I tried installing small baffles which made little to no difference at idle. I haven’t had a chance to try them other than at idle.

Finally was able to go for a real ride since it was a balmy 40deg Fahrenheit…the mod seems to be working/sounding good. As stated in my previous post, the sound is way deeper at idle and lower RPMs and then is similar to stock but louder. No drone at all at highway speeds. 👍

I‘d be glad to help anyone who is thinking of doing this mod and or the simpler mod described in this original thread . I’d also consider swapping (for a slight fee) my moded exhaust for a stock exhaust as I’d like to continue experimenting with different mods for the stock exhaust.

Also, if anyone has a stock exhaust they’d like to sell, please PM me.

Thanks
