Replace Oil Filter Only Question

I changed oil with extended Bosch filter. Bad seal and leaked. Dealer replaced with original Triumph filter.

I looked at some Bosch at Walmart. They looked OK. This is additional info that you have to look at filter end cap before buying. You want an "inny" not an "outy".

You lose a small amount of oil if you just remove the oil filter. I did it just the other day when I changed oil and filter for the first time and realized I didn't have the 8mm allen wrench for the drain plugs. I removed the filter and maybe 6 ounces of oil drained out.

I used a K&N filter with the 'Nut' welded on the end which makes an R&R very easy. The chrome cover fits also.

I do wonder how much additional heat that chrome cover keeps in the oil filter since air can't hit it????? It seems silly to me, sort of like covering and external oil cooler with a full chrome shield so it looks nice---weird.

I have never had a rock puncture an oil filter on the bottom of any bike engine in 53 years of riding so really, what good is the cover?

In the future I would check that K&N filter. It's design could also change without notice.

I doubt the engine sheds much heat through the air filter. Many new water cooled engines use a water cooled, oil cooler. It is mounted between the block and oil filter. I have them on a couple of my vehicles. Not ideal for the R3 due to length but on my other bikes and cars the extra length is not an issue.

My Dad had his car oil filter "slapped" by a road gator on the interstate. It busted it open at the flange. Lost all the oil in seconds.

I'm sure in that case the little chrome cover wouldn't have done a bit of good.

I like breaded and fried Gator!

I'm not worried about K&N as I've used them on everything for years.

I would worry about lots of these other $1.99 a six pack oil filters

The moral of the story is when you walk into the auto parts store to get a filter open the box and check like stated above "to see if it has a innie or a outie
