output shart bearing replacement info

Just ordered parts to replace the OSB on my 07 Rocket, silver motor, manufacture date is 05/06. I talked to the dealer and plan on pulling the swingarm and dropping the rear of the engine to pull the OSB out to replace. Just looking for any info from someone that has done this before, you know any tips or pointers I may need to know before I tackle this job. Riding season will be here shortly and I want to get ready. Also whats the best battery to put in the Rocket? Mine is getting a bit worn out

Gee I had mine (05) replaced under warranty full upgrade engine kit in 2010.. bike had done 10000 k +.. can't you swing it with your dealer ?

The manual states you have to pull the engine to remove the out put shaft/torsional damper shaft are you sure you can do it without pulling the engine? I will go look at my other rocket to see as I have one with the engine out and one that is still together. If you have to pull the engine you might wnat to install the update kit why your at it. Of course if you do not have any gear problems you might want to wait.

The dealer made it very clear it was no longer under warranty, 28000 milles on it AND they're making 800-1000 labor to replace them, I'm a contractor by trade I also raise bucking bulls and was a mechanic for 20 some years and I can buy other things for that cash. I love the Rocket but getting tired of working on it. I'll probably keep it for ever though and buy a touring bike for a second bike

Hey Scott, how are you? I've read on here that some of them have replaced them without pulling the engine all the way out, as much work as you've done on the Rocket you could probably pull the engine and do it faster. I have no problem with the gears, everything shifts really good.

I know what you mean I could not afford to pay a tech (plus there is none within a 200 mile range) so I learn myself. I am glad I have a second Rocket to ride while I am working on the other one. The second is a stocker so less chances of breakage from playing hard.

Mine was changed at 35,000 or so when they did the tranny fix 2nd gear jumping out.
Funny thing was the tech told me who could not explain why my bearing was in backwards and yet did not fail. He noted I had been bottoming out the torsional damper spring reularly by the marks he suspected. It might be wort looking into the update kit for your beast it comes with the parts you are changing anyway plus more things just to update. New timing chain, chain guide, clutch springs, electronics, and a few other things to boot. Maybe Triumph will cut you a deal on the kit.

If your bearing went your going to want to see if metal got anywhere it should not have? The sump pan is a easy drop I even have noticed the gasket is so good I have used the same one three times. You could then check the sump screens for signs of metal. This would help you decide how far you should go on her. It would suck to put her back in and have to take her back out again. I would also open up the oil filter for a look see.

Pitty I must have been lucky I guess, I remember there was 20 hours labour (engine out) to put the upgrade kit in.. what a difference it made to the bike..

Yep! I remember that Warp, I went in and they showed me the bearing with the bearing seal side being fitted the wrong way round.. cant see how the bearing could survive like that

this is the first time I pulled the engine so its new to me. I will go look at my other one to see if I could get it out with just the swing arm out. I had to split mine as I bent the tranny input shaft when my internal clutch hub grenaded. I sure hope I get her back together right

I've had the clutch springs and lifter piece replaced twice, still have the lifter piece you located for me about a year ago, keeping it in case I'll be needing it. I have a whirling, grinding noise coming from the OSB area while decelerating, low rpm's 12-1800 rpm in all gears, that's the only time I hear anything, all the gears are good though. I'm planing on pulling the sump pan and flushing things out, change oil, filter, etc.

Have you checked your rear wheel bearings? I feel the inner one could send a vibration up the shaft if bad. Its the one on the male drive spilnes. When mine went in for the update kit the tech noticed I had a bad one. Its worth a check and you can grease the shaft splines if you haven't yet. Its a quick and needed check!!!! might save you a big hassle.
