Oil Level Issue

2006 R3 Classic 22000 miles - Something very strange is happening... In the last month or 2 occasionally when i check my oil level it appears very low.. nothing on the dipstick, and if you look in the tank you can not see any oil..

so even though i was surprised at that level since i have not heard of them using oil like that added a couple quarts of amsoil.. went about my business and about a month later found the same thing.. added another quart of oil and started to say to myself something is not right.. no leaks, no smoke... well yesterday same thing.. was going for a ride and checked the oil before leaving and it was down again. added one quart to at least get it on the end of the dip stick and heres where the fun started...

Took off down the street and 2 houses down from my house the oil dipstick blew out and oil went all over the left side of the bike and my left leg..

I immediately shut the bike off and pushed it home..
Put oil dry down in the road as there was a big puddle of oil there.. washed the bike off and drained about 3 qts of oil out of the tank to get the oil to the proper level again..

I know i need to recheck the manual to see what im doing wrong but ive had this bike and another R3 before that and never had this problem..
Anyone else??
Whats going on here.. why is the tank showing no oil?
obviously i over filled it.. luckily the dip stick is not a screw on or it would have blown the seals right out of the motor..

To check the oil, start the bike let it run for a minute, shut it off, then check the level. What's happening is some of the oil in your tank is flowing down into the crankcase. When you start the engine it pumps it back into the oil tank.

makes sense and thats exactly what i was planning to do.. just funny i never noticed it before.. or had to do that before..

Additionally, to check the oil level properly, the motorcycle has to be level, not on the sidestand. That's stated in the owners manual and the shop manual. Run the engine for a minute (or two) and then check the oil. The engine has 2 oil pumps so flow is quite brisk.

Most Rockets, as they age, will leak down to the sump if they sit for a time. There is a check valve in the bottom of the oil line from the tank to the sump but it eventually starts bypassing oil.

Rockets are't oil burners. They actually have a good set of oil control rings, unlike some other bikes.

Must have been an 'interesting' experience, the cap blowing off. Sort of like the Deepwater Horizion and the failed BOP.

EXACTLY!! YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!! JUST GLAD IT HAPPENED SO QUICK AND NOT A FEW MILES UP THE ROAD.. THAT WOULDNT HAVE BEEN FUN PUSHING AN "OILED UP" R3 (AND DRIVER) ALL THAT WAY BACK HOME..


Sorry for the Bold and caps on.. but it may be warrented lol..
