After a whole bunch of searching and part # cross referencing I have discovered that the Honda VTX 1300 & 1800 oil filter {latest Honda #15410-MFJ-D01} is an interchange for the R3 filter #T1210444.
I had a brand new Honda oil filter laying around that HDL {Honda Direct Line} had sent me by mistake a few months ago and I was struck by how similar it looked to the Triumph filter. That got me curious and since I'm a partsman by trade.....
The Honda filter is made by the same company as the Triumph filter {Toyo Roki} and can be bought for $8.39 from HDL. Convienent for me as I use HDL for most of my Honda bike parts. 8)
Now if I can just find somebody that sells the same Mobil 1 15W50 oil that Triumph sells!

Eddie, thank you for the information.

Ride carefully.

I see that you had a Valkyrie, I had one as well and still have oil filters that I got from Honda Direct for my Valkyrie. Can I assume that they will be interchangable with my Rocket ??

Nearly all Honda filters are the same, just different numbers. I've been using hiflo oil filters from my VTX since my first oil change. Don't know how much the Triumph filter is but I can get the hiflo locally for $7.

Good find. I do have a question as this comes up a lot in car forums, are the internals of the filter the same?

Just because the outside looks the same and everything lines up and looks right doesn't mean it flows or filters the same way.

It would be interesting to get one of each and open them up to compare.

Real good info, Tropic, but I wonder if there is any difference in internal construction or materials between the Honda and Triumph filters. Can you find a common part number on the two brands of filters?

If you can find Mobil 1 4T Motorcycle Race oil anywhere besides the Triumph dealer then go for it. It costs half as much at an auto supply shop, but I haven't found any shops by me that sells the stuff to compare. Triumph brand says it is specially formulated to their specs. Who knows. Difference is probably minimal.

The Valk/Shadow filter is a different part # and is about 3/8" longer than the Triumph/VTX filter. Not sure about the internals of the Valk filter. I can only speculate, but I don't think Honda would have come out with a complete different filter and part # for the VTX filter if the slightly longer existing Valk/Shadow filter would suffice. Possibly they are the same internally if the VTX has oil filter clearance issues and that is why the filter is shorter. Don't know, I've not changed oil on a VTX and seen for myself.
The Triumph T1210444 and the Honda 15410-MFJ-D01 are totally identical except for the printing on the can. They are painted the same black color and are even shrink wrapped in the exact same plastic wrap. Both interchange to the same aftermarket part # in several brands too.
I've been in the auto parts biz for over 30 years and I know a LOT of "farming out" of parts is done. I'll guarantee both Triumph and Honda make none of the filters on any thing they make, it's all farmed out!
It's interesting to note that both Triumph and Honda find that Toyo-Roki makes a high enough quality filter that they will both stamp their names on them. All reviews I've read of Honda branded filters rank them high in quality.
Yep, RR- K&N lists part # KN204 as the oil filter for VTX and R3.
