Oil change - that old chestnut again

Hey all,

Buying a write off I didn't get any paperwork like a manual with the bike, done a search on here and found different answers, but what's the right quantity of oil when refilling?

Seen posts in quarts which mean nowt to me over here

Is 5.5 litres correct? I don't even know what a quart is!! But google tells me 5.5 quarts is 5.2 litres, not 5.5

And whats the word on synthetic versus semi-synthetic?

Triumph tell me it would have been fully synthetic at new and being 5 years old and having only done 962 miles when I bought it, if it HAD ever been serviced it would have been 1st Triumph service, a must for the UK warranty, so would be synthetic.
 


When you put in the new oil don't put it all in. Put in about 5L, stand it up, start it for a few seconds and then add the rest of the oil. If you use a slightly longer filter (here in US a Mobil 1 M110 is a little longer vs the M108) you can put a little more oil into the beast. I run Mobil 1 full synthetic and it works just fine. IIRC the semi synthetic is used at the initial fill and then changed out at the first service to full synthetic, but I could be wrong.

I've run Motul synthetic with good results. I've got 6 quarts of Mobile 1 turbo diesel oil I'm going to try when I change it again soon. 6 quarts = 5.67812L according to the calculator i just looked up. Like Bob just said put 5 in it, start it and then put the rest in. I also use a filter that is a little longer than stock but I doubt its big enough to make much of a difference. It's a dry sump system so a little more won't hurt it.
 
Wow. Full synthetic will work no matter which brand. Add five and run it for a minute or two then go back and add the rest. Simple said simple done. Wic filter and Mobil works for me. To each his own.
 

I put 6 full ltrs , Never have had a problem with the xtra oil in the tank. Been doing this for the last 3 seasons.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, helpful as always I know, it's just an oil change but it is always worth checking when you are as cr*p on the spanners as me

I put the drained oil into containers and it looks to be about 5.5 litres

I used 5W40, works better from cold and is same as 10W40 once hot, fully synthetic.

For those in the UK, Halfrauds have a sale on Mobil oils and they are cheaper than the Halfrauds own, which I have used in the past and is actually pretty good.
 
Hi Timbo… as long as its motorcycle oil its fine and 5.5 litres is about right.. you can always top it up later.. I used motul oil last time and got enough off eblag for £40 with the filter. Mines due a change soon so how much was it from Halfrauds?
 

Not sure how much Motul was but I got 5 litres of Mobil for £31, all Mobil is 20% off.

I am now but didn’t know that, it’s in now so I’ll have to try it but thanks
