@LAS VEGAS DAVE, this conversation has been had with IFT before. As far as he is concerned the real world is 1/4 mile long and lasts a few seconds. It appears that he cannot comprehend that some of us want the engine to go slower so as to increase comfort, fuel economy, and decrease engine wear. The RIII would tour quite comfortably at 80mph with the engine turning over at around 2200 - 2400rpm. It will probably not happen though.

I asked Triumph several times about a 6 speed as thats a question Ive been asked They tell me the Rocket is already geared as high or higher than the other bikes and I said that 6th gear could be setup as a highway gear as the Rocket with 2300cc can pull even higher gearing then any of the other bikes and maybe it would be a sales booster along with a lot of other goodies that owners might like different colors, floor boards ,and a host of other equipment and a high performance model with say 240 HP. But I havnt heard anything concrete yet but we will see what they come up with.

Interesting as I own two Rockets a stock 09 classic with carbon fiber BST wheels and my 2012 modded 250 HP Roadster and I ride both everywhere with a group of local riders on all types of bikes and we ride on all types of roads lots of twisty back country roads, Highway,in town light to light and everything in between and comfort is a priority we dont have any roads that have a higher than 65 mph speed limit , I get 40+ mpg on the highway on both bikes I have cruised along at 80 and higher several times but for short periods as its way over the speed limit and both Rockets handle those speeds with ease . and once in a while the group will go to the DRAGS and race . I usually help them and watch as I know what the modded rocket can do as we rent the track for testing and tuning SO I do it all with my bikes so I do understand but I Dont need any gearing changes for my bikes but I think a six speed trans would be sales tool as some of the cars are running 8 speed automatics like the new Corvette I drove one on a test track and I was impressed .SO Im going to continue to bug Triumph to give us a 6 speed and a list of the other things the Riders would like

Maybe you could bug Carpenter to come out with a kit that makes the gearing higher. I bet he would sell them.

The truth is if your concerned about fuel economy then you dont want to travel at as fast a speed keep your bikel 60 or under for the best mileage it might take you a few minutes longer . traveling at 80 mph you will use 25% more fuel75 to 80 isn't really excessive speed around here.
Of course some people disagree.

Another factor that influences higher speed cruising comfort is exhaust noise ,in any vehicle if the exhaust is extremely loud it tends to make you think the engine is reving higher than if the sound is not so intrusive , I have noticed this in modified Cars and Trucks ,the GM two stroke diesel in my old International truck many years ago sounded like the pistons were swapping barrels at 2000rpm as it was firing every 2 strokes and I had the almost mandatory loud pipe on the truck
later on when I got into the bigger conventional diesels(Macks) and doing long hauls I kept the induction (twin snorkels) and exhaust stack noise down to a reasonable level , the same with motorcycles a loud Harley is a PITA to cruise at 130Kph for long periods and even worse to follow, I have followed noisy Rockets at highway speed and they sound like they are reving more than my relatively quiet Tors and Crossover equipped one

I could care less I travel at a comfortable speed and dont think of mileage but that happens to get me 40+ mpg on the highway as I run the same speed as traffic .But you'll get there 33% quicker, so it's worth it

If you ride a motorcycle you get pretty good fuel economy no matter what model it is. If you want better fuel economy then maybe a Vespa or one of the little Chinese scooters. If that isn't good enough and you refuse to walk try hitchhiking. I would think that fuel economy is not high on the list of concerns for owners of Rocket 3 bikes.

Fuel economy for me only comes into the equation when I am travelling long distance then its the range of the tank ,some places in Oz are a long way between fuel outlets, worse scenario for my Touring I bank on 6.5 litres per 100 Ks so 300Ks is what I calculate as maximum "safe" range with a few Ks up the sleeve, not a fan of running on empty with the fuel light on and the needle on E
