How is the lifespan of the Avon. I find d stock the handling of the r3r is really good but have read that the rear tire make is more challenging than it needs to be. Sounds like the Avon helps this .... but is there a compromise?
Oh dear. Only about a million posts and dozens of threads on here discussing the relative merits of the only 3 rear tyre options and still the same questions.

Well the Rocket's been around for 10 years and it's a pretty safe bet that there's been one or two discussions about tyres. There's only 3 to choose from, unless you're going to try a wheel barrow tyre or something equally ridiculous. Some days I'll spell it all out for the umpteenth time and other days I take the same stance as the questioner ie can't be bothered. Sorry.
We've all (well 95%) agreed the Metz sucks on the rear. Since it's stock nearly everyone has at least tried it. From there, you only have the Avon or the excedra Max (or a CT). I've never tried the Avon on the rear, because I've been riding the max rear cobra front combo for a while and love it. You can always try both, but the majority of non DS riders I think are on the max rear. I haven't been around long as Canberra and had to type it so much so I didn't mind writing the summary this time
