I own a 2011 Roadster fitted with TOR’s and the associated Triumph tune and have also asked this question.
My understanding is that Triumph decided to retard the timing in the first 3 gears to tame the beast for the faint hearted. That said most of us then spend a lot of time trying to find a way to access the full potential of our bikes.
To my knowledge there are three methods available to fix the timing issue;
1. Take it to someone and get a dyno to reset the parameters;
2. Use a third party software application such as Tuneboy or Tune ECU to fix the timing / set the secondaries;
3. Install a Gipro to trick the ECU that you are always in 4th (or 5th) gear where there are no timing retard issues.
The issue with options 1 & 2 are that you will void your warranty for tampering with the ECU, therefore best wait a couple of years before going down this road.
The problem with installing a Gipro to the Roadster is that the bike comes standard with a Gear Indicator (GI). If the Gipro is set to trick the ECU that it is always in 4th then the stock GI will indicate that you are always in 4th gear.
Triumph have now decided to remove the restriction on the new 2013 model, however I have confirmed through Triumph that this tune is not compatible with earlier models due to software changes in the 2013 ECU.
I believe that Triumph should now offer all R3 owners a tune that removes this restriction (suited to both stock & TOR exhaust applications) as part of a customer support program since they no longer see a problem with this setup. From their point of view it would provide a level of quality assurance and remove the risk of owners tampering / mucking up their ECU's.
Obviously Tuneboy / Tune ECU would still be required if aftermarket exhaust systems /air intakes are installed.
Anyway, that's just my two bobs worth
