I believe Triumph wanted to 'standardize' the mounting clamps. The clamps that mount my windshield are excat copy's (or is it the other way around) of the clamps that mount the lower deflectors. I like the design of the clamp though I like the design of my own clamp better but then, my clamp isn't holding the lowers on.........It would have made a little more sense to make the clamp half of an unequal length thus putting the bridge more toward the front of the bike rather than below the centerline of the fork.
By the way, sorry I didn't get back to you on the Lifecycle openhouse. It rained all week and I'm a fair weather rider unless I get caught in the rain. Your Ensign and Old Glory are safely tucked away on the bench for another time and place. I'm sure new customers broke the doors down to get 50 gallons of free gas............
