Glad you made it through reasonably unscathed, jcb. Lesson learned, it appears.

Get yourself a new pair of skivvies and do not do this again, please!

JCB7469, Glad you are going to be OK. The bike will heal quite well too after your $500 investment.

Scott, Would you please post a couple of videos about how to avoid and recover from this kind of event ?

I wish I had a video to post, my words were maybe a wee bit emotional as this has happened to a few friends of mine at a high speed (over 60mph) both were okay as they had ATGATT on, I do not practice high-sides what we show the students is rear wheel locks at speeds no higher than 25mph and strongly encourage them (unless they know for sure that the wheels are in line) to keep the rear wheel locked, as the accident happened on a base(on Eglin 30mph is the common speed limit) I just took it for granted that the speed was low I could be wrong and believe you me it would not be the first time but practice these quick stops please please please that split second could save your life.
Now ABS a lot of old timers talk bad about it but it can and it will save your life in the right circumstances plus all bikes over 500cc within a few years when bought new will have to have ABS in fact you can buy the Ninja250 with ABS
Happy that you are okay as said bikes can be fixed us mere mortals that is a different story.

9over 60mph)

Glad you are ok! It dosent take much to clock up the $ when you lay a bike down, by the sound of it you were expecting a lot less in damages.

I am not sure about the US but here in Tassie our mechanics charge $120 to $150 per hour depending on where you go.
Well 120 Aussie is same as 100 usd. Do you think it would be possible to have insurance buy me the parts and let me do the labor and I keep the difference? Or is that not allowed? I do owe on the bike.

If you agree with the insurance company's estimate I see no reason why they cannot cut you the check and you do the work yourself, that is what I did with my van about a year ago
It's done all the time over here so I can't see why not
