Right rear side of the engine just behind the infill panel . Bringing it up to the filters does not hurt anything but if your starting to get some blow by you will not see it until it is very bad. Same if you dump it into the exhaust except you might see a fog out the pipe if your getting blow by. All engine have a little which is why there is a vent. It gets worse if you have forced air.

I used the original hose that went to the airbox, just swung it out in between the engine and airbox. Then I found a little piece of metal tube 1/2" in diameter and a couple hose clamps to splice on the 1/2" hose up to the breather. I then used a 90 deg. 1/2" barbed fitting I got at a home center in the underground sprinkler area, to attach it to the breather. Used a hole saw to cut hole in the breather.

Don't really want a filter down the back of the engine if I can avoid it, so will probably go for a solution similar to Rocket Scientist's.

What do people tend to do with the original air box, just OOI?

Use it for storage. It makes for a great glove box. The K&N replacement will take less than 2 hours.

Unless you ride in rain a lot I don't think you need to. There is only two openings in the air box. The breather tube at the bottom and the opening at the top. I have been stuck in heavy rain 3 times in September and the air box stayed completely dry.
